Star Wars Game Reportedly in Development by Heavy Rain Studio

Rumors surfaced that Quantic Dream, the studio behind Heavy Rain, is working on a new Star Wars game.

French YouTuber Gautoz posted a video on Sept. 16. claiming that developer Quantic Dream has signed a deal with Disney. The rumor found its way online following Lucasfilm’s recent announcement that it would be open to new Star Wars pitches. “They now finished their contract with Sony and will be signing with Disney,” said Gautoz in his video, referencing the companies' three-game contract between Sony and Disney. “It looks like they will be working on a Star Wars game.” Games industry insider and writer at DualSHOCKERS, Tom Henderson, posted a cryptic mashup on Twitter, just two days after the Gautoz video. The picture combines Detroit: Become Human and two Star Wars lightsabers, suggesting that the rumors are true.

Lucasfilm had an exclusive deal with EA, which came to an end when the company announced it would be partnering with Ubisoft on a new open-world game. Lucasfilm's agreement with Ubisoft, a publisher with big open-world hits under its belt, such as Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Assassin's Creed Odysseysignals a new era for the studio. The common link between Ubisoft and Quantic Dream is Yohan Cazaux, who worked as a designer on many Assassin's Creed titles, and as lead designer on Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The former Ubisoft employee has since joined Quantic Dream.

Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games, wrote: “We’re looking to work with best-in-class teams that can make great games across all of our IP. We’ve got a team of professionals here at Lucasfilm Games who can work with the developers, shape the stories, shape the creative, shape the games, to make them really resonate with fans and deliver across a breadth of platforms, genres, and experiences so that all of our fans can enjoy the IPs that they know and love.”

As for Quantic Dream, the studio recently ended its ten-year contract with Sony. Since then, former PlayStation exclusives Heavy Rain, Detroit: Become Human, and Beyond: Two Souls have been released for PC under the Quantic Dream label. The company also opened a new development studio in Montreal, with Stéphane D’Astous at the helm. Before this, Quantic Dream only operated through its studio in Paris, France, developing influential story-focused games including Fahrenheit and The Nomad Soul.

With Lucasfilm willing to deliver games across all platforms and genres, a partnership with Quantic Dream could mean a narrative-driven Star Wars game alongside the upcoming open-world installation. No official statement has been made on either side of this alleged deal, which means that gamers and Star Wars fans alike will have to wait and see if the rumors are true.
