Teddy Ruxpin Resurrected as a Movie Franchise From Sonic Film Team

The production company behind the Sonic the Hedgehog feature film is turning the popular '80s bear Teddy Ruxpin into a full-fledged movie and TV franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, plans are to begin with a Teddy Ruxpin hybrid movie (live-action and computer animation) before looking to develop any animated projects for the small screen. DJ2 Entertainment, the company that adapted video game franchises Sonic the HedgehogLife is Strange and Tomb Raider, are behind the Teddy Ruxpin revival.

"I'm no hunter, but I've been tracking this bear for at least seven years," DJ2 founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson said. "It's no exaggeration to say that the time I spent enraptured by the stories Teddy Rux told me is a large part of why I chose a career in entertainment. So, thanks Teddy — and, of course, thanks, mom."

The late Ken Forsse created Teddy Ruxpin in 1985. The bear had the ability to tell stories through a cassette tape that came with preloaded tales. Teddy's eyes and mouth would also move while telling the stories. Forsse, an author and producer at Alchemy, died in 2014. He was also behind the animated The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin series that ran for two seasons 1986 through 1987.

"Teddy encourages two things the world always needs: connection and imagination," said Jan Forsse, president of Alchemy. "We're very pleased to be working with DJ2, and so gratified that people like Dmitri and his team retain their passion for, and connection to, our Teddy. Like us, they want to continue sharing him with the children of the world."
