The Batman: Jeffrey Wright Talks Film's COVID Production Shutdown

The Batman star Jeffrey Wright has shed some light on the production issues brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Upon sitting down with IndieWire to talk about his role in The French Dispatch, the conversation inevitably turned to his role as Batman's friend and ally James Gordon. While the actor revealed few details about the film itself, he did open up about his experience working on the movie during the height of the pandemic.

Wright revealed the early stages of COVID-19 were concerning for him as he could have ended up trapped in the UK, where The Batman was filming. As he explained, "I called my agent and said, 'We have to get out of here. We may be isolated here. There's no way in hell we're going to be shooting. It's about to go down.’”

The actor went on to admit that he was thankful for the safety precautions put in place after the film resumed shooting. "There were breaks and ventilation requirements and separate spaces for hair and makeup," he said. "We took it very seriously and were respectful. We got it done safely."

In previous interviews, Wright claimed his version of Gordon plays a more active role in The Batman than previous iterations of the character. This is in contrast to Colin Farrell's Penguin, whose role in the film will reportedly be limited to around nine minutes of screen time.

Fans can expect to see more footage of The Batman during next month's DC FanDome event, where the second trailer for the film will premiere.

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson and is directed by Matt Reeves. The film glides into theaters March 4, 2022.
