The Wheel of Time's First Trailer Plunges Right Into the Action

The first teaser trailer for Amazon's epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time has just been released, giving viewers an action-packed look at the nations of the show and the threats to come, as well as a vast range of the characters who populate them.

Beginning with a scene in which Nynaeve (ZoĆ« Robins) tells Egwene (Madeleine Madden) to be strong and then shoves her off a cliff into deep water, the trailer then offers some idyllic scenery representing their village, Emond's Field, and the countryside around it. Other people who live there get their introductions as well, including Rand (Josha Stradowski), Mat (Barney Harris) and Perrin (Marcus Rutherford), laughing together at the inn. A voice over from Rosamund Pike's Aes Sedai character Moiraine establishes the setting through dialogue straight from the books by Robert Jordan, and then the footage expands into journeys and conflict as the music heightens. At the end of the trailer, a release date for the series is confirmed, November 19.

Many different Aes Sedai are shown, with the coloring of their clothing showing which of the seven Ajah they've chosen, and even the Amyrlin Seat (Sophie Okonedo) who rules over all of them makes an appearance. Several scenes appear to be set in Tar Valon, the city where the powerful organization is centered, which suggests a divergence from the pace of the first book in the series as well as a concentration on Egwene's goal of learning to channel the One Power and becoming an Aes Sedai. The trailer also provides a first look at the human-animal hybrid monsters called Trollocs, as well as iconic moments such as Rand shooting an arrow, Perrin's encounter with a wolf and Mat reaching for a jeweled dagger.

The Wheel of Time is set in a nameless world with subtle connections to our own and frequent references to a long-ago apocalyptic event called the Breaking of the World. Since the corruption of the male half of the One Power in the Breaking, only women can wield it without mentally snapping. Those who have the ability have organized into the elite society of Aes Sedai, who, as Moiraine claims in the trailer, use their power to protect the world. The story begins with a group of young villagers that Moiraine recruits, promising to help the women among them to train their innate abilities. She also swears to protect and contain the men, one of whom she believes may be the prophesied Dragon Reborn. Gradually, the awakening of ancient evil, the mysteries of the rebirth cycle and the clashing of political powers bring the characters into a worldwide conflict.

Starring Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney and Josha Stradowski, The Wheel of Time is based on the epic fantasy book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. The show will premiere on November 19, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
