It appears Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn won’t be invading more nuptials anytime soon. Despite production planned to start this month, Wedding Crashers 2 has been put on indefinite hold as Wilson chose to join Disney’s Haunted Mansion reboot instead.
According to Puck News, Wilson and Vaughn were reportedly ready to sign a deal in which they would make $10 million each, while production was set to begin in Georgia and Puerto Rico in October. However, right before the final script was delivered, Wilson instead signed on for Disney’s Haunted Mansion reboot, which also starts shooting in October. He’ll play a supporting role opposite stars Tiffany Haddish and Lakeith Stanfield.
A sequel to the 2005's Wedding Crashers, which grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, has been in development at Warner Bros. for several years. The most recent plan was to make the film for HBO Max, with Wilson, Vaughn, Isla Fisher and Rachel McAdams all on board to return, in addition to director David Dobkin. The idea was for the sequel to update the story to take place in the #MeToo era, as the original movie centered on two guys who crash weddings in an attempt to meet and seduce women, a somewhat problematic storyline in today’s landscape.
It's speculated that Wilson chose The Haunted Mansion over Wedding Crashers 2 -- which would have been a bigger payday -- to maintain his relationship with Disney following the success of the Disney+ series Loki. The Haunted Mansion is also expected to spawn a future franchise, which could prove more lucrative in the long run. After filming The Haunted Mansion, Wilson will be busy shooting Season 2 of Loki, putting Wedding Crashers 2 even further down the pipeline.
Regardless of Wilson's reason for abandoning the sequel, the long-in-development movie has reached a dead-end for now. However, the project could potentially be revived next year if Wilson’s schedule allows it.
While promoting Loki earlier this year, Wilson frequently expressed his excitement about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It seems the actor would rather remain in that universe, and part of the Disney machine in general, over crashing more weddings.
