What Do Critics Think of WarioWare: Get It Together? | CBR

WarioWare: Get It Together was one of the many surprising game announcements during Nintendo's E3 presentation this year. The WarioWare series has been dormant since 2018's WarioWare Gold released for the 3DS. While a new WarioWare game on the Switch was expected at some point, the game's announcement seemed to come out of nowhere and shocked both fans and critics alike.

Get It Together officially releases on September 10, and critical reviews for the latest WarioWare entry are out. There's a fair amount of anticipation surrounding Get It Together, especially when it comes to how the microgames will take advantage of the Switch's JoyCons. Here's what critics have to say about the game.

Most critics are quick to point out just how chaotic Get It Together's gameplay can feel, which many cite as being a positive. IGN calls the assortment of mini-games "a delightfully wacky test of both reaction speed and problem-solving," which lives up to the standard WarioWare fans have come to expect. Destructoid also notes the game's classic sense of chaos, while Eurogamer specifically points to the campaign as being just as chaotically fun as ever.

Critics seem in agreement that Get It Together keeps the fast-paced onslaught of wackiness that the series is known for alive, though not everyone agrees this is a good thing. GamesRadar calls the game's chaotic nature "wonderfully weird," but also points out that said weirdness is often overshadowed by frustrating gameplay mechanics. One of these is the introduction of multiple playable characters, which most critics think to be a poorly executed gimmick.

While the WarioWare games are known for being gimmicky, said gimmicks tend to blend nicely with the microgames. This time around, Get It Together uses the WarioWare series' huge cast of characters as its gimmick, giving each one their own unique mechanics. Any character can be used in any mini-game, something that Eurogamer calls "a feat of balancing," though not everyone enjoys the new mechanic.

Multiple reviews talk about how certain characters can completely break the difficulty of certain mini-games with their unique abilities. While IGN says that the roster "shake up familiar microgames nicely," it also points out that many playable characters felt like worse versions of others. GamesRadar and Polygon also note how the characters overcomplicate an already chaotic game, with Polygon calling the new mechanic "time-consuming."

While Get It Together's character selection mechanic seems to have broken up the familiar fast-paced madness of the WarioWare series, critics did still seem to enjoy their time with the game. Nintendo Life calls the game a "triumphant Switch debut," for the series. GamesRadar and Destructoid both praise the microgames, saying they continue to be a strong point for WarioWare. However, some critics felt as though the various character took away WarioWare's usual simplicity.

WarioWare: Get It Together has received some criticism for how it changes up the WarioWare formula, but reviews overall seem to agree that there's plenty of fun to be had. Fans of the chaotic WarioWare series should enjoy Get It Together, even if a few of the game's selectable characters can trivialize some microgames. While the complexity may frustrate some, Get It Together is still a WarioWare game that fans who have fallen in love with the series will probably enjoy.
