5 Things We Know About Insomniac's Wolverine Game So Far | CBR

During PlayStation's Showcase on September 9th, it was revealed that Insomniac is developing a brand new Marvel game. Riding off of the success that is the Marvel's Spiderman series, Insomniac is planning on developing a Wolverine game. Wolverine is one of the most iconic superheroes on Marvel's roster. As a result, Wolverine has had his fair share of video games, much like the surprisingly good movie tie-in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Now thus far, not much is known about the game. Very little has been officially confirmed, and a lot has only been speculated. But some information has been released so far.

5 The Game Is Still In Development, With A Release Date Of Potentially 2023

This should come as no surprise, but the game is still in the early stages of development since it was announced this past September 9th alongside Marvel's Spiderman 2, which is still in development. This means that the Wolverine game may be some time.

Now a release date is a little harder to pin down. The release date of Marvel's Spiderman 2 claims to be released in 2023, with no estimate on when in 2023 the game would be released. The Wolverine trailer did not have a definite release date; some speculate it may be in late 2023, but nothing is extremely concrete.

4 The Wolverine Game Will Be A PS5 Exclusive

As confirmed from the announcement trailer and the PlayStation Blog post, Marvel's Wolverine game will be coming exclusively to PlayStation 5. Of course, since Insomniac game is contracted to Sony Playstation, this comes as no surprise.

Now, will the game were to stay exclusive? While none of the Spiderman games were announced to be released to PC, some of the other previously exclusive PlayStation titles, such as Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn, eventually were released to PC. So there may be a future in which not only the Spiderman games will release to PC, but perhaps the New Wolverine game may be as well.

3 The New Wolverine Game Will Be A Slightly More Mature Game

The game's creative director Brian Horton has made very few announcements regarding more details about the game. However, on Twitter, he was able to provide a little more insight into the game. Brian Horton retweeted the Wolverine announcement trailer wherein he was asked if the Wolverine game will be "a big" or a "miles morales" size game, to which Brian responded by saying, "Full size, mature tone."

The phasing of "Mature Tone" can mean several things, but it does not provide a solid answer. This could mean that Insomniac will take the Wolverine game in a much more mature direction and perhaps may lean into stronger gore and violence other than his Spidey counterpart. However, this could also mean that this Wolverine game will be much more mature in its style but still maintain a T rating to appeal to a broader audience. Hard to say.

2 The Gameplay Of Wolverine May Be Something Amazing

Now many gamers can agree that the gameplay in Marvel's Spiderman series is phenomenal, what with being able to swing around New York, beating up criminals, and utilizing all of Spiderman's moves to take down villains. Insomniac even stepped up their game further with Marvel's Spiderman: Miles Morales by adding Miles' "venom" abilities with fun to play lightning-based moves.

At the moment of writing, there are no gameplay videos of the upcoming Wolverine game. However, the studio's Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations, Ryan Schneider, has been quoted saying that the gameplay being "cutting edge." This little bit of info, alongside Brain's tweet about the game being a "Full size" game, leads to a couple of possibilities. The game will be about as big, if not bigger, than the first Marvel's Spiderman. Two, the studio plans on taking Wolverine in a new direction away from Spiderman. After all, Wolverine can't swing from building to building as Spiderman can.

1 The Location Of The Wolverine Game Has Yet To Be Confirmed But There Are Some Strong Clues

Where The Wolverine game will take place has not yet been confirmed. There is much speculation online based on little clues of the announcement trailer, but nothing is definitive. The trailer showcases Wolverine sitting in a bar after what appears to be the aftermath of some brutal fight.

The Bar's name is briefly shown in the trailer to be the Princess Bar. The Princess bar is a known bar in the Marvel Universe settled within the fiction southeast Asia island of Madripoor. This location was recently visited in The Disney+ show The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. The game could take place here, which would be a unique location, but as it stands, there is not much known on the setting of Marvel's Wolverine game.
