Batwoman Photo Reveals First Look at Killer Croc's Badass New Design

The first photo of Batwoman's Killer Croc has surfaced ahead of the super-villain's appearance in Season 3, Episode 2, "Loose Teeth."

Along with the photo, Entertainment Weekly provided the backstory for this new incarnation of the scaly antagonist. According to his description, a teenager named Steven transforms into the creature, "whose hunger and ferocity may even exceed that of his predecessor," after picking up the original Killer Croc's tooth -- one of many Batman super-villain trophies that fell into the Gotham River in Batwoman's Season 2 finale. "As the bodies pile up, Batwoman will be forced to decide if there's enough of Steven left in this new Croc to reason with, or if he's already too far gone."

Created by Gerry Conway, Gene Colan and Don Newton, the original Killer Croc, Waylon Jones, first appeared in 1983's Detective Comics #524. He made his live-action debut in 2016's DC Extended Universe film Suicide Squad, with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje bringing the character to life via practical effects that helped the movie to snag an Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling.

"I was like, 'Eh... what is it like, a crocodile as a character on the show? I like it theory, but what is it in execution?'" said Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries, recalling how she felt when the show's writers pitched Killer Croc for Season 3. "Once you mine it and mine it and find this core essence of it and you can apply science to it, even if it's schmience, I can ground it in reality somehow and it'll make sense in my brain. So that's what we did with Killer Croc, and we understand that [it's a] mutation and it ultimately makes sense, and comes from a very human place."

As Dries explained, Batwoman's Killer Croc storyline is, at its core, "this story about a dad who doesn't want to give up on his son." This relates directly to what Ryan's going through in Season 3 after Alice revealed her biological mother is still alive in the Season 2 finale. "[Ryan is] going through learning that her birth mom gave up on her in the blink of an eye and it's kind of [about] her reconciling that with where she stands as Gotham's savior," Dries added.

Batwoman continues with "Loose Teeth" Oct. 20 on The CW.
