Black Adam First Scene Introduces Dwayne Johnson to the DCEU

The first footage from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema's Black Adam debuted at DC FanDome.

The scene finds several archaeologists exploring a cave. What they discover, however, is Black Adam, who crushes one of them with ease.

Johnson's name has been tied to the Black Adam character since 2007, but a solo film wasn't greenlit until 10 years later. "Yes, of course, in the mythology Black Adam is a villain, or he can be an antihero," Johnson said in 2017, one month after Warner Bros. officially announced Black Adam. "Or to some, he's a hero -- to some who have a black heart, like me. Growing up the DC villains were always my 'heroes.' As evil as they were, they were always my favorite. Still are. Luthor, Joker, Brainiac, Sinestro etc. and of course the ruthless one, Black Adam. Cooking up some cool, bad ass and fun plans with DC to introduce Black Adam into the Universe."

Notably, Black Adam was teased in 2019's Shazam!, though the longtime rivals from the comics aren't expected to come face-to-face in the DC Extended Universe anytime soon. Instead, Black Adam will formally introduce the Justice Society of America, including Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell). Black Adam himself has also served on the JSA in the comics.

The first official look at Black Adam was revealed at last year's DC FanDome. "Black Adam is one of the most powerful characters in the DC Universe," Johnson said at the virtual event. "However, heroes must show restraint against their enemies. Black Adam does not practice restraint, which makes him very likable to me."

More recently, producer Hiram Garcia discussed how Black Adam would utilize new technology to bring the DC antihero's powers to life. "I'm thrilled for what we have created and the vision that [director] Jaume Collet-Serra has for the film is exceptional," he said. "There were a lot of aspects to this film that were important to us, from big dramatic storylines that we wanted to explore to make sure we were properly representing an antihero of Black Adam's caliber to the visual effects and displaying Black Adam's powers in a way that we think the fans will love."

Black Adam arrives in theaters July 29, 2022.
