Eternals Will Introduce 'True' Celestials to the MCU | CBR

Though the Celestials have popped up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before, Eternals will put a whole new spin on the gigantic cosmic beings.

At a press conference attended by Screen Rant and other outlets, Eternals producer Nate Moore revealed how the Celestials in the film will be quite different from the ones previously glimpsed in the MCU. More said the godlike entities will be "true Jack Kirby Celestials" with an updated design for the live-action MCU. As teased in the Eternals trailers and promo images so far, the Celestials will look a lot like those Kirby created in the pages of Marvel Comics but with a more spindly and organic look that mirrors the armor and powers of the Eternals and the designs of the Deviants.

Of course, Celestials almost identical to Kirby's designs already appeared in the MCU during a scene in Guardians of the Galaxy where the Collector explains the Infinity Stones to the team. But Moore said the new movie will showcase the Celestials "in all their glory."

"In the Collector's lab, they're frankly not as big as they would be in our mind, and obviously Ego was a much different version," Moore said. "So this gets to be the giant monolithic space gods and you get to see them, which is exciting."

As Moore mentions, Ego was also presented as a Celestial in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, deviating considerably from comic book canon. That also makes Peter Quill part Celestial, another complicated wrinkle. The producer didn't explain how all of these iterations will be reconciled, though it could be that certain Celestials just have a different look to them. Knowhere, the severed head of a Celestial, also looks different from the beings in Eternals, though the size of its head -- able to house a functioning city -- certainly offers the scale Moore teased.

Like in the comics, the Eternals and the Deviants are both created by the Celestials. And it's the race that prevents the Eternals from interfering with human affairs -- unless the Deviants are involved. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has teased that Eternals will redefine the MCU, and it's likely the Celestials and their tampering will be part of that. They could even serve as the gateway to other powerful races from the comics, like mutants and Inhumans.

The Celestials will arrive in all their glory when Eternals debuts in theaters on Nov. 5.
