First Scream Trailer Drops Tomorrow | CBR

The first trailer for the fifth Scream film now has a release date.

As revealed by Scream star Jack Quaid, the first trailer arrives on Tuesday, Oct. 12. "Good news everyone! The trailer for [Scream] comes out TOMORROW!" he wrote on Instagram. "In the meantime here’s a FIRST LOOK at my character Richie, from [EW]. Only in theaters January 14th!"

"It was a wildly anxiety-producing situation," co-director Tyler Gillett recently explained. "They were not disposable roles; they were very, very important and the heartbeat of what was great about the script. We couldn't imagine the movie without any of them and so not having that perfectly locked-in right off the bat was definitely scary."

Gillett, of course, was referring to returning Scream stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox. "We’re pinching ourselves!" Radio Silence Productions said when Campbell signed on to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott. "It’s hard to express how much the character Sidney Prescott shaped our love of movies and to have the chance to work with Neve is truly a dream come true. It just wouldn’t be a Scream movie without Neve and we’re so excited and honored to join her in Woodsboro."

With original Scream director Wes Craven having passed away, the reins are being passed to Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin. "I definitely had a period where I was thinking it would just be too odd to do a movie without Wes, and I wasn’t certain that I would want to do that," Campbell said in May 2020. "But, I think enough time has passed. I got this really, really respectful letter from the directors [Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett] of the new one."

While many believed the fifth Scream film would be Scream 5, it's since become clear that the new movie is a reinvigoration -- or, according to Cox, a reinvention -- of the franchise. "This is the 5th one, it's not Scream 5 though, this is Scream," she said. "It's hip, it's scary, it's just a new Scream - it's not a reboot, it's not a remake, it's just a brand new launch. The directors are incredible. They're making it absolutely - it's a new franchise."

Scream arrives in theaters Jan. 14, 2022.
