Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy: Definitive Edition Finally Announced

Rockstar Games finally announced the long-rumored Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition.

Revealed on Twitter, the brief teaser trailer showcases a variety of iconic images from the classic PlayStation 2 Grand Theft Auto games. In order of appearance, the footage confirms that the collection will contain Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The trailer does not confirm a release date, simply teasing fans with a "coming soon."

Rockstar Games followed up the announcement trailer with a tweet reading, "Later this month marks a very special anniversary for Rockstar Games: 20 years since the original release of Grand Theft Auto III," writes Rockstar. "In addition to carving a new path for the open world genre, Grand Theft Auto III established Grand Theft Auto as a cultural phenomenon, alongside its two subsequent — and equally legendary — entries in the series, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas."

The developer and publisher of the long-running franchise promises that each game will be updated and improved to better meet today's standards set by modern hardware. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition will feature "across-the-board upgrades, including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements for all three titles while still maintaining the classic look and feel of the originals."

While many long-time fans will no doubt enjoy playing the ground-breaking series of modern hardware, Rockstar Games did confirm that the original versions of all three games will be delisted from storefronts. The games will disappear as early as the week of Oct. 11, meaning players wanting to experience the old-school action-adventure games will need to settle for the spruced-up versions.

Rockstar Games also promised a slew of other anniversary celebrations, including commemorative events and items in Grand Theft Auto Online, while also teasing a new update to the game that will see players help "some known and familiar faces" to set up what are absolutely, definitely legit businesses.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition will launch later in 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. In 2022 the collection will also release for Android and iOS devices.
