Legacies Season 4, Episode 3 Recap & Spoilers | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Legacies Season 4, Episode 3, "We All Knew This Day Was Coming," which aired Thursday on The CW.

Even before Legacies' latest episode premiered, The CW teased that Hope Mikaelson would be dying soon in Season 4 with "Hope Must Die" promo art. Fans of the hit supernatural series and The Originals have been wondering for some time exactly when Hope would die and face her destiny as becoming the one and only Tribreed. Season 4, Episode 3, "We All Knew This Day Was Coming," pushed Hope to get one step closer to becoming the most powerful magical being in existence. The only problem is that she's still not alive by the episode's end.

The episode opens with a now-Malivore-controlled Ethan revealing the monster's latest plan to conquer Hope and all of humanity. Instead of just consuming individuals, Malivore has learned that he can push some of his being into others and control them -- basically using The Thing-type logic to build a supernaturally strong army of followers. Hope runs across one of his minions and kills him while unleashing her signature sigh. However, after she stabs this Surtur-looking creature, the beast transforms back into a normal -- but very dead -- high school student. This tragic surprise ultimately pushes Hope to choose death.

Now determined to become the only thing that can kill Malivore, Hope tries to convince the Super Squad and Alaric that she needs to die. Pretty much everyone thinks this is Hope's decision to make except new besties Alaric and Kaleb, who don't totally trust Hope. Kaleb doesn't trust her because he assumes she's selfish, deep down, whereas Alaric fears that she'll behave in a way similar to her father, aka The Originals' blood-lusting Klaus. It doesn't help any that Cleo and Landon are still trapped inside of Malivore and Kaleb fears that Hope will use her new powers to kill him before the team can find a way to save either -- though we all know he really only cares about Cleo.

Unfortunately, MG sees Kaleb's desire to save Cleo as heartless -- considering that if Malivore isn't stopped soon, he'll end up transforming and killing hundreds of innocent people. MG breaks Kaleb's neck to give everyone enough time to make their own peace -- including Hope -- with what's been destined to happen for some time. Of course, once Kaleb awakes he's pretty pissed off and decides to make a deal with Malivore in hopes to get Cleo back.

Difficult conversations are pretty much the only ones being had at the Salvatore School in this episode. Hope's "unthinkable" choice brings up the Gemini Twins' dreaded merge conversation. Although the topic ends up bridging a gap between Alaric and Lizzie, it drives a substantial wedge between Josie and Finch. Understandably, Finch is terrified at falling in love with someone who's got a 50/50 chance at surviving past her young adult years. However, Josie finally takes a stand for her self-worth and tells Finch that she's someone worth fighting for and staying with, even if the outcome might not be pleasant. She drops that truth bomb and leaves Finch to cry in the woods. It's unclear if this speech will be enough for Finch and, frankly, it feels like Josie has grown enough to leave on her own terms if it's not.

After Alaric confronts his fears about Hope dying, he decides to throw a huge last-day-of-life dinner party with the squad. Hope drinks and is merry and is then visited by her Aunt Freya. After exchanging some bittersweet moments about who Hope is and what she's destined to become, Freya uses a spell to quickly and painlessly kill her. Hope is stuck in a version of an afterlife and speaking with the Ferryman, who seems to be gesturing her towards a place with shiny lights. A confused Hope is left wondering what path she should choose -- eternally undead or the promise of peace.

While the Super Squad awaits Hope to wake up to complete her vampire transformation, Kaleb makes a surprise return to the Salvatore School. Turns out that his big deal with Malivore was to become one of his monster-minions, steal a now-dead but not quite undead yet Hope, and jet off into the distance with a fancy set of new vampire wings. MG walks in a second too late and is sucker-punched out of the way. The real irony here is that Kaleb was convinced Hope would risk everyone's life to save Landon, the love of her life, and he basically does the same thing for Cleo -- and he hasn't even had a first date yet! If Hope wakes up soon, all hell is about to break loose once she finds out Kaleb betrayed the entire team for someone who would hate to see him like this -- and likely will never give him that first date now.
