A new Ghostbusters game is in development from Illfonic, the studio behind a variety of licensed asymmetrical multiplayer games.
Speaking on the Questlove Supreme podcast, Illfonic's co-founder Raphael Saadiq mentioned the studio was working on an as yet untitled Ghostbusters game. Addressing the studio's large catalog of products, Saadiq says, "Friday the 13th, the last one, and Predator, and we're working on Ghostbusters right now and Arcadegeddon is out right now."
No further information on the project was provided but given Ilfonic's track record and the nature of the Ghostbuster's IP, it's possible that the game will be an asymmetrical multiplayer experience. Similar to Predator: Hunting Grounds and Friday the 13th: The Game. Fans are speculating that the game will place one player in the role of a ghost who must avoid a team of Ghostbusters looking to eliminate the spooky threat.
This won't be the first Ghostbusters video game. The franchise has a long-running history of game adaptions dating back to 1984. Perhaps the most recognizable game in the franchise is 2009's Ghostbusters: The Video Game. An original story that places players as a new recruit in the titular team, the game was praised by fans and critics for its engaging mechanics, writing and faithful recreations of the franchise's characters. Ghostbusters: The Video Game was recently remastered for modern consoles and is currently available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
As for Illfonic's other 80s-inspired horror multiplayer games, Friday the 13th: The Game was released in 2017. Players take control of a group of characters, all pulled from the film series' extensive lore, who must escape from Jason, embodied by a separate player. Released to mixed reviews, many found the game's janky controls and dated visuals disappointing, while others found fun in playing as the hulking hockey mask-clad villain. Due to licensing issues, the game's servers were shut down in November 2020. Friday the 13th: The Game is available for purchase on digital storefronts but peer-to-peer matchmaking is the only way to currently experience it.
As for Predator: Hunting Grounds, the 2020 game features a similar structure to Friday the 13th. One player is tasked with eliminating a team of survivors as the Predator, equipped with a variety of deadly tools. The survivors, sporting their own weaponry, must either eliminate the Predator or complete a series of objectives to escape. The game also received mixed reviews upon release and is available on PlayStation 4 and PC.
Considering Illfonic's Ghostbusters game has yet to be officially announced, it's likely that a release date is still a ways off.
