Prince of Persia Actor Reveals How Much of Sands of Time Survives in the Remake

Voice actor Yuri Lowenthal explained what it was like to reprise the part he made famous nearly two decades ago in the upcoming remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

"It was one of the greatest honors of my life to return to a role that I had loved so much and thought was in the rearview mirror for me," Lowenthal, who voices the titular Prince, told USA Today. “For them to want to do the remake 15 years later and to come to me and not some younger, hotter actor was truly an honor."

Lowenthal added that revisiting the world of a game that had originally released in 2003 was similar to rewinding time, much like the Prince of Persia himself, whose magical dagger is able to undo his mistakes. The experience was also markedly different since this time around Lowenthal was able to venture outside the recording booth and work on performance capture with his co-star Supinder Wraich, who took over the role of the game's deuteragonist -- Princess Farah -- from the original actor, Joanna Wasick.

"When we did the first The Sands of Time, I may have done three to five recording sessions for the whole game, and that was my contribution," Lowenthal said. "This time I got to literally step into the shoes again. I got to rewind time and see if I could do it better. I honestly couldn’t say enough good [things] about the experience. I love the new director, we got to keep all of Jordan Mechner’s brilliant writing and then and then redo the game better. I can’t wait for people to finally get a chance to play it. I know it’s been tough in the post-production, but I’m really excited."

Lowenthal's comment about post-production may refer to the added development that the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has undergone since its reveal in 2020. The project's initial trailer was criticized by fans who pointed out the game's dated graphics and disappointing presentation. The remake, originally intended for release in January 2021, was delayed until March 2021 and then delayed once more to an indefinite date. A recent message from the development team on the game's Twitter account reassured fans that work was "still under way, motivated and inspired by your feedback."

The original version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released in 2003 for Playstation 2, GameCube, Xbox and PC. It won acclaim for its compelling story, penned by creator Jordan Mechner, as well as its third-person action-adventure gameplay, which revitalized a series that had lain dormant after the 1999 game Prince of Persia 3D received middling reviews.
