Originally released in April 2019, Shazam! grossed $366 million against a budget of between $80 and $100 million, with the movie's ten superhero suits costing $1 million each. The movie, which holds a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, follows Billy Batson, a 14-year-old who becomes the champion of the wizard Shazam. However, he's soon forced to contend with the villainous Dr. Thaddeus Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins.

Following the release of the original Shazam!, director David F. Sandberg and writer Henry Gayden were confirmed as returning for a sequel. Later, at DC FanDome in August 2020, Warner Bros. officially revealed the title of that movie as Shazam! Fury of the Gods. This past June, Sandberg shared a look at Shazam! Fury of the Gods' new costumes.

Production on Shazam! Fury of the Gods wrapped in August, and although the movie was supposed to hit theaters on April 1, 2022, the coronavirus (COVID-19) resulted in Warner Bros. delaying the project until June 2, 2023. At this time, little is known about the plot of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. However, new characters include Atlas, Hespera and Kalypso, making clear the Greek Gods will indeed play a big role in the film.

Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Faithe Herman, Meagan Good, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Ross Butler, Jovan Armand, D.J. Cotrona, Marta Milans, Cooper Andrews and Djimon Hounsou are all returning for Fury of the Gods. Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu are slated to join them in the franchise. However, Mark Strong is not expected to reprise his role as Sivana in Fury of the Gods, and it's not clear if Mister Mind -- a classic Shazam villain who appeared in the original's mid-credits scene -- is in the movie.
