WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Supergirl Season 6, which airs Tuesdays on The CW.
Of all the dangerous villains featured on Supergirl, Nyxly stands out as one of the most powerful the Girl of Steel has ever faced. Not satisfied with 5th Dimensional magic, Nyxly wants to recreate the cosmically powerful Allstone to take revenge on her father. In her quest for the first Totem needed to recreate the Allstone, Nyxly faced an unexpected complication, as a psychic link developed between her and her enemy, Supergirl.
This link has similarities to another famous fictional mental connection. The Harry Potter franchise heavily focused on the psychic and emotional connection the titular Harry Potter shared with the fearsome antagonist, Lord Voldemort. Voldemort's attempt at killing an infant Harry resulted in a piece of the Dark Lord's soul getting sealed inside the young wizard. This created a link between the two, allowing each to feel the other's emotions and thoughts.
Kara and Harry each believed they could use their connections with their enemies to their advantage. Lena offered to try and sever the connection between Kara while Severus Snape tried teaching Harry how to shield his mind from Voldemort. Both heroes, however, did ultimately benefit from the connection. Kara gauged how close Nyxly was to obtaining a Totem based off her emotional state. In the films, Harry sensed Voldemort's reactions to the destruction of his Horcruxes while also sensing his emotions during the Dark Lord's search for the Elder Wand.
The biggest similarity Kara and Harry shared about their links is the anxiety the connections gave them. Kara felt deeply responsible for finding Nyxly and was constantly waiting to sense something from the Imp that would help her. Harry's anxiety was different, in that he feared Voldemort would use their connection to gain control over Harry, or even use his memories and secrets against his allies.
The connections do have their differences, with Harry and Voldemort's providing much deeper insight than Kara and Nyxly's. For example, Harry once had a vivid vision where he saw through the eyes of Voldemort's snake Nagini as she attacked Arthur Weasley at the Ministry of Magic. Nyxly and Supergirl only sensed each other's extreme emotions, typically after either experienced a major loss or victory.
Most different of all was how the connections were ultimately broken. Harry and Voldemort shared their mental link up until Harry's "death" by Voldemort's hand. The Dark Lord accidentally killed the piece of his own soul inside of Harry instead of Harry himself, successfully severing their link. In the end, only death managed to break the bond between the two wizards destined to fight each other.
On the other hand, Kara and Nyxly had their connection severed after Supergirl's ally William stole the Courage Totem that connected them back from Nyxly. Grabbing the Totem reverted it back to its inert form, severing Supergirl and Nyxly's connection. Whether some residual link still exists between the two is unknown, though other Totems may recreate the connection depending on how they are handled. In the end, Harry and Supergirl both proved that sometimes beating your enemy means getting inside their heads.
