The Rookie: Wesley Made a Deal With the Devil - and Angela Doesn’t Know

Warning: The Following contains spoilers for The Rookie: Season 4, Episode 3, “In the Line of Fire,” which aired Sunday October 10th on ABC.

There have been two major changes in Season 4 of The Rookie. First, Jackson West was killed off, and second, Angela has been away from the LAPD on maternity leave. Back in this season’s premiere episode, Angela gave birth to baby Jackson after being rescued from the drug queenpin La Fiera at her compound in Guatemala. It was a great display of the LAPD going above and beyond to save one of their own. However, there was a small detail about the mission that has been overlooked thus far, and it’s about to cause big problems for Wesley.

When La Fiera’s goons took Angela, they moved fast and had a head start, so they easily made it out of the country on a plane. The LAPD didn’t have the means to track down the plane, and the government refused to pull resources to do so. They had no way of knowing where Angela was headed, so Wesley made a deal with the devil. He got into contact with a career criminal and drug dealer named Elijah Stone and promised to be his dirty lawyer.

In “In the Line of Fire,” it's been two months since they rescued Angela, and Elijah is getting impatient with Wesley’s extended paternity leave. So, he goes into Wesley’s law office, where a secretary has no choice but to call him and tell him that a potential client is there. When Wesley arrives, Elijah reiterates the terms of their deal, and it’s clear that he is very serious. Any lies or foul play on Wesley’s part will result in big trouble for the lawyer.

Later in the episode, things get even worse. Wesley and Angela go out for a date night at a fancy restaurant, and Elijah makes another appearance as one of Wesley’s “clients.” While Angela is away from the table, Elijah shows Wesley that he has hacked into a live feed of their baby monitors. So, at that point, it isn't just trouble for Wesley that Elijah is promising. He's clearly threatening Jackson and Angela if Wesley doesn't cooperate to the fullest extent whenever Elijah comes calling. Wesley gets rid of the baby monitors, but the fact that Elijah found a way to access them means that he could probably do it again.

The main plot in the episode followed a murder investigation, with the murder pulled off by a professional killer with a sniper rifle. After some good policing work and literally wrestling a grenade from his hands, Nolan and Chen brought the killer in. Some more investigating revealed that the sniper was a hitman, hired by none other than Elijah Stone, which seamlessly connected the episode’s main plot to its subplot.

Sure enough, by the end of the episode, Elijah sent Wesley to the sniper’s cell with a note. That was illegal enough, but it turned out to only be a test for Wesley. Either way, Wesley is going to have to defend the hitman, and he better find a way to prove his innocence, or else. To complicate things, Angela has no idea about any of this. Wesley never told her about how they found her or that Elijah was making threats on her and the baby. He has been dealing with it all on his own, but if he is going to get out of the deal, he’s going to need help at some point.
