WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, now playing in theaters
On top of introducing the first live-action adaptation of Cletus Kasady and his crimson symbiote, Venom: Let There Be Carnage also featured an exciting mid-credits scene that seemed to tease huge crossovers to come with none other than the hugely successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. It appears that this revelation was almost going to be included earlier in the film.
Director Andy Serkis recently discussed the scene with CBR's own Meagan Damore. When asked about his initial reaction to it, Serkis explained, "There'd been talk of it, of course, for the entire -- you know, even I came on board, and during and then all the way through the shoot. It was like, 'Are we gonna...? Is it...? How are we going to do this?'" He added, "There were versions where it got closer earlier, actually, but this little sort of teaser moment is where we ended up. Why? Because it leaves things open."
Serkis did not delve into specifics about the scene itself or what it means for future Venom films and the MCU, but teased, "It doesn't mean necessarily that the portal is -- you know, why we don't need for it to be the next thing that happens. It could -- you know, we just wanted to leave it ambiguous, but at the same time, let everybody know that there is a possibility."
Prior to the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, a description of the post-credits scene, as well as audio from its early screenings leaked online, revealing that the Sony film would establish a connection with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Particularly with Spider-Man, as audio from the final scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home could be heard in the background.
While the connection was never officially confirmed or denied, star Tom Hardy stoked rumors and speculation by wearing a hat featuring the logo of Spider-Man: No Way Home in an interview. The scene's portal and shift in reality suggests a connection to Phase 4 of the MCU, which has thus far placed focus on the multiverse that was established in the season finale of Disney+'s Loki.
Serkis has been asked about whether or not Sony's symbiote antihero will face Spider-Man-- the film rights for which are still owned by Sony. Serkis only said that they will confront each other eventually. "It's going to happen, the question is when. We don't want to rush it."
