WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 3 of You, now streaming on Netflix.
With Season 3 of You coming to a shocking end, Penn Badgely's Joe Goldberg is once again free to continue his rampage. After killing Love and ending his marriage, Joe faked his death, which is why he's roaming Europe with a new lease on life. And seeing as he's no longer shackled by life in America, it's possible the show's fourth season could answer its biggest mystery.
This is the fate of Joe's mom, Sandy, who is the source of all his internalized issues. The first two seasons revealed she was neglectful to him while cheating on his dad, which created turmoil at home. It got violent, with Joe eventually shooting his dad and ending up in an orphanage, where he got exposed to even more aggression.

Season 3, however, makes a startling revelation that Sandy didn't die or end up in jail for the crime. As Joe rummaged through his psych evaluation files years prior, he discovered Sandy was alive and well, and he eventually found her with a new son, Jacob. A young Joe snuck up on her, only to be broken over how she rejected and abandoned him. The show left things there, but given that Sandy's fate is still up in the air, viewers need to know if she's alive or dead.
Many assume that Joe's in Paris to track Marienne, the librarian he fell in love with in Madre Linda, but it could be he's scouring for his mom. Of course, that mission would still allow him to find objects of affection and women to lust over, but even if France is kept for romance, a season more dedicated to decoding the flashbacks would make sense.

It would be a nice change of pace for Joe after being obsessed and fawning over women for years and could explain why he has this savior complex despite his own infatuation problems. But more than that, getting closure on Sandy's fate would bring Joe's trust issues full circle, as her deceit was what started it all, upending a boy's life by setting a horrible example in an already turbulent world.
To see Sandy help turn Joe into a monster, Season 3 of You is streaming now on Netflix.
