Over the course of his career, Bruce Willis has played various characters in a multitude of intense, action-packed films, including some films so far from his usual genre that they shocked fans. However, one of his most famous roles is, without a doubt, John McClane from the iconic Die Hard series.
John's character is one of few that manages to balance macho with sentimental and tough with tender, so it's interesting to wonder how he'd interact with Bruce Willis' other roles. Since John has an even amount of friends and enemies (roughly), it's safe to say he'd have split feelings towards his other characters. At the very least, if he can't befriend any of them, he might still respect some of them.
10 The Fifth Element: John Would Respect Korben's Way Of Fighting Back
Both John and Korben Dallas from The Fifth Element share a tendency to shake up the battlefield. Both of their fights come with a great amount of collateral damage. In spite of the fact that Korben is supposed to be undercover in The Fifth Element, he doesn't hide his combat or military skills when the enemy attacks.
While John's willingness to fight might give his superiors headaches, he'd understand that, sometimes, the rules have to go out the window – especially when it comes to saving his own life or the lives of others.
9 RED: John Wouldn't Respect Frank's Tactics To Keep His Love Safe
One of the most lovable aspects of John's character is how much he loves his wife – even if their relationship is slowly slipping away. He's willing to do anything he can to protect her, even if that means putting his own life on the line. This spousal instinct is something John shares with the character Frank Moses from RED. However, as much as he wants to protect her, there are some things he'd never do.
John would be put off by the extreme lengths Frank goes to when he threatens an innocent mother and child to ensure the safety of his girlfriend. On top of that, Frank is a little too worried about his girlfriend and doesn't fully trust her to take care of herself. On the other hand, John is well aware that his wife can handle herself, even against a terrorist. She just needs a little backup.
8 Pulp Fiction: John Would Be Concerned For Butch But Respect Him In The End
In the chronological beginning of Pulp Fiction, Butch Coolidge – a boxer nearing the end of his career – becomes involved with the mob boss Marsellus Wallace. As someone who believes in doing the right thing, John would be concerned for Butch. However, since he's not quick to judge anyone's mistakes, he wouldn't necessarily disrespect him.
Butch winds up in trouble with a mob boss and is almost killed by him when they meet. However, their fighting is disrupted when they're captured by a serial killer. Butch manages to escape his confinement, but rather than leave and save himself, he confronts his captor and strikes him down with a katana, allowing Marsellus the final death blow. Marsellus lets the squabble with Butch go, and if John knew what had happened, he'd be proud of Butch's final decision.
7 Armaggedon: John Could Never Tolerate Being Told What To Do By Harry
If there's one thing Harry Stamper can't stand, it's recklessness. He's known to be extremely critical of those who don't handle things carefully, and that's something John could never deal with or respect. If something has to be taken care of, he'll do it, but on his terms. Even if it means a few helicopters blow up, as long as the job is done, John is fine with that. That said, the two might bond over their love of their daughters, but even that might become an argument about how to do it right.
6 The Sixth Sense: John Would Encourage Malcolm And Be Proud Of Him In The End
As much as John likes to push people's buttons, he has a very caring and supportive side that grows over time. If he ever met Malcolm Crowe from The Sixth Sense, John would understand the doctor's hesitance to help his patient.
John might find Malcolm's lack of determination a little frustrating, but he'd respect how the doctor needs a little time to think things over. When he does take on Cole Selar's case, John would be proud of his decision and how hard he works to do the right thing.
5 Over The Hedge: John Would Hate RJ's Conniving And Selfish Personality
John is the type of person who makes up his own rules, but he'd never do so to hurt anyone innocent on purpose. On the other hand, RJ from Over The Hedge is the epitome of selfishness, doing whatever he can only for his own personal gain.
RJ is tasked with retrieving human food for a bear he tried to steal from, or else lose his life. When the raccoon comes across a group of animal scavengers, he coerces them to gather food from humans rather than their usual food from the forest. He pretends to be a friend, but in reality, he plans to steal all the food they gather to save his own hide. John would have great disdain for RJ's actions, and he'd still harbor some disrespect even after RJ makes amends.
4 Unbreakable: John Would Respect David For Keeping His Family Together
One of John's biggest regrets and recurring struggles is keeping his family together. Although the McClane family members reconcile with each other in each of the films they're in together, it doesn't change the fact that the relationships are very bumpy.
David Dunn from Unbreakable struggled with his marriage a little, but eventually pieced everything together and enjoyed a fantastic relationship with his son, Joseph. As dramatic as the plot becomes in Unbreakable, the family drama doesn't take center stage like it does with the McClanes – and that's something that John would greatly respect.
3 The Expendables: John Would Disrespect Mr. Church For His Cowardice
There was a motley crew of badass characters in The Expendables, but Mr. Church was one of the least exciting of them all. All bark and no bite, Mr. Church is great at telling people what to do but then doesn't show up or put his own effort into the mission, which he's eventually called out on.
John would call out Mr. Church for not taking part or getting his hands dirty too, but even after Mr. Church jumps in to prove everyone wrong, John would disrespect the dirty tactics he uses, like scamming and murdering people.
2 Mercury Rising: John Would Respect Art For Taking Back Control Of His Life
The film Mercury Rising begins with undercover FBI agent, Art Jeffries failing to put a stop to a hostile bank robbery. His superiors punish him for revealing his identity, even though he was only trying to do the right thing. Consequently, they make him work at a desk until he's called in to investigate a possible suicide.
Although Art accepts the punishment and does as he's told, John wouldn't disrespect him for that, especially not after Art goes on the run to save the life of a little boy. Although he does stick within the rules of the law throughout the film, Art goes against his superiors' commands, which is something John would respect.
1 Looper: John Would Be Disappointed That Old Joe Went Down Such A Dark Path
In the film Looper, an assassin named Joe is tasked with killing off captured targets sent from the future. After one of his targets is revealed to be his older self, he decides to retire from his job and run away to avoid being killed. In the future, the older Joe lives a life of illegal luxuries and pays for it by doing hit jobs on the side (until he falls in love and settles down).
Sadly, his wife is killed by mobsters and he goes on the run again. Older Joe makes several terrible decisions in his own interests, even killing innocent people, which John wouldn't be okay with.
