Eternals Is the MCU's First 'Rotten' Film on Rotten Tomatoes

Eternals set a new milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- but not the one fans were probably hoping for.

At the time of this writing, Eternals has a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 145 reviews. Not only does this make it the worst-reviewed Marvel Studios film of all time but also the only "Rotten" one on the review aggregation site.

As for what the critics are saying, The Globe and Mail's Barry Hertz argued that "[director ChloĆ©] Zhao is a baffling choice: a filmmaker who is ill-equipped and out of her element, with her discomfort visible across nearly every frame of the film." San Francisco Chronicle's Mick LaSalle added that "It takes a special kind of movie anti-magic to make an entire audience indifferent to the potential destruction of the planet and the elimination of all life and Earth. Eternals manages it."

While these reviews hail from professional and certified critics, Eternals was already subjected to review-bombing by fans on IMDb that targeted the movie's LGBTQ+ elements. In response, Kumail Nanjiani, who plays Kingo, wrote, "Looks like we’re upsetting the right people."

Eternals centers on the eponymous team of immortal superheroes created by Jack Kirby. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, the Eternals are brought out of hiding thanks to the reemergence of their lifelong enemies, the Deviants. In addition to Nanjiani, the ensemble cast includes Bryan Tyree Henry as Phastos, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Angelina Jolie as Thena and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman.

"In the past, we see the Eternals, who, in our version of the mythology, are immortal aliens from a planet called Olympia," producer Nate Moore recently said. "[They've] been asked by the Celestials to come to Earth to rid the Earth of creatures called the Deviants. The Deviants are these parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet, and as they kill the apex predators on a given planet, they sort of take the characteristics of those predators and wipe out intelligent life. Well, the Eternals are heroes, so they've come to earth to eradicate the Deviants and allow humanity to thrive. So, in the past, we see the Eternals as they come earth as they begin their mission."

Eternals arrives in theaters Nov. 5.
