As many moviegoers will be aware, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be the second major franchise that Eternals star Kit Harington will be a part of, and the second franchise that takes its spoilers very seriously. Harington is more than used to it, thanks to the secrecy surrounding HBO's Game of Thrones, before the series ended.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Harington was asked about whose security is more intimidating between Marvel Studios and HBO. Harington answered, "If we’re talking about security as in spoilers, I’m terrified of Marvel." A similar answer was given by his Game of Thrones co-star Emilia Clarke, who will also appear in the MCU.
Clarke previously confirmed that she will appear in the upcoming Secret Invasion series and joked, "It's called Secret Invasion... but I'm already scared... The first people I spoke to from Marvel were their security team, and I am convinced there is a man outside my house. There's been a car parked there for a long time and, I swear to god, it's undercover."
Spoilers were a significant issue with Game of Thrones. Especially during its later years as its viewership grew. It was reported that by Season 8, HBO had taken to using a special app to provide actors with the scripts. The script would disappear after actors had finished reading, according to star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. It was also reported that certain scenes would be shot on sets that were closed off from all but essential crew and that extra security was maintained to ensure that paparazzi and eager fans were kept away from the set, scripts or any other material they could use to spoil the show. Four endings were filmed for Game of Thrones to throw audiences off.
Marvel Studios has generally kept security tight on all of its productions. Similarly to Game of Thrones, actors are not always given full scripts, with the exception of a few. Major twists and plot details are often provided to actors last minute, in order to prepare them.
Despite these precautions, details can still leak. Spider-Man: No Way Home has suffered a number of reported leaks, including the premature reveal of its first trailer, which was released shortly afterward and debuted the return of Alfred Molina and Doc Ock. Leaked photos and reports also detail the return of a variety of other villains and the three recent iterations of Spider-Man, including those played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
