Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has revealed Vin Diesel's Baby Groot was not, in fact, the most popular character in the movie following test screenings. Instead, that honor goes to Dave Bautista's Drax the Destroyer.
In a thread on Twitter, Gunn was asked if anyone else read or tested for the role of Drax outside of Bautista. Gunn said yes, but added Bautista was the best choice for the role. Another user then mentioned their love for Drax, and Gunn replied, "In the test screenings of Volume 2, Drax was the most popular character, edging out Baby Groot."
Released in 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a sequel to 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. In the sequel, Peter Quill/Star-Lord meets his father, Ego, who is much more sinister than he first appears. At the box office, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 outperformed its predecessor and made more than $860 million against a budget of around $200 million. However, the sequel didn't fare as well with critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 holds an 85 percent, while the original is currently sitting at 92 percent.
Currently, Gunn is working on a third Guardians of the Galaxy film, which he says will be his last. At this time, plot details about the third Guardians of the Galaxy film are unknown, though it will feature the debut of Will Poulter as Adam Warlock and Sylvester Stallone will also reprise his role as Stakar Ogord, a member of the Ravagers. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is said to be the end of this iteration of the team, and Bautista has said that, when Gunn leaves the franchise, he will also depart the MCU.
Although Gunn was originally confirmed for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2017, he was fired in 2018 after offensive comments he'd made in the past resurfaced. However, following outcry from fans and actors, Disney rehired Gunn later that same year. Production on the film, which was originally slated for May 1, 2020, later took a backseat to Gunn's work on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, both of which are projects in the DC Extended Unvierse.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now scheduled for release on May 5, 2023.
