Is Saved by the Bell Returning to a Jessie & Slater Romance?

The trailer for season 2 of the Peacock revival of Saved by the Bell promises that Bayside High is once again going to war with Valley. However, while it seems the teens will be more aggressive than Zack Morris and Co. were back in the day, that doesn't mean the older generation will be left out the comedic and dramatic moments. Just as in Season 1, it seems we're going to dive into personal stories with our favorites from yesteryear, with fans already noticing that the series may indeed be returning to a Jessie Spano and A.C. Slater romance.

This was one of the big pairings from the original series, with Slater very quickly realizing that a love triangle with Zack and Kelly made no sense. He and Jessie got together instead, crafting an intriguing dynamic, as he was a jock while she was a bookworm and overachiever. They helped each other through a lot, as Slater dealt with family issues as an army brat and being looked down for not being smart, while Jessie even had an addiction problem at one point as she tried to excel at school.

Sadly, after Kelly's wedding, nothing came from their romance, which disappointed fans who expected to see them together in this continuation. Instead, Jessie followed her dream path, one of education, with a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. She became a New York Times best-selling author of parenting books, gave TED Talks and was involved in politics, which sadly led to jealousy from her failing writer of a husband, René.

The season 2 trailer confirms they're going through a divorce, which has a few folks, including the creepy Mr. Dewey, interested. However, as Kelly tells her it'll be okay, she mentions Jessie's got her first love at the school still in Slater, who's the physical education teacher and football coach at Bayside High. There are shots of them offering wistful glances to each other and even slow dancing, looking on with that puppy love we fondly remember from the old show.

It does feel like something will happen, as that chemistry was there last season in spades, although a married Jessie drew the line. There's a lot more nuance still as Slater is helping Jessie's son, Jamie, find himself as an athlete and aspiring brainiac too, thus he's already filling a father's role of sorts.

But while he is a perfect match due to their history and chemistry, Jessie seems to have her eyes on a fireman, even posing on the pole at the fire station to homage Elizabeth Berkley-Lauren's Showgirls moments, which could create a jealous Slater at their alma mater.

That said, it'll be interesting to see if these two duck the spark or if they really lean into it. It'd make sense for them to commit to being a couple again as they're so good with each other, plus we know a vulnerable Slater hasn't gotten over Jessie. It could lead to Zack and Kelly pulling strings rather than pranks, a welcome change indeed. For now, only time will tell if their role as Cupid helps Slater finally get his dream girl.

Saved by the Bell Season 2 premieres Nov. 24 on Peacock.
