An indie game development studio started a petition to convince Warner Bros. to let it remaster Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
The studio in question, Eyeballistic, believes that the project would act as a celebration of the iconic fighting game franchise which is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2022. Within the Change.org petition description, the studio notes, "... we’d like to honor this amazing franchise by re-making the original Mortal Kombat Trilogy (MKT) on PC and consoles. MKT is a classic game combining all of the characters from MK1, MK2, MK3 and UMK3 [Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3]. It also includes nearly all of the stages from those games."

Eyeballistic claims to have previously had discussions with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon regarding a potential remaster of the original trilogy. Boon reportedly "fully supported" the initiative but the game was blocked by IP owner Warner Bros. The publisher rejected the proposal, stating that the project wouldn't sell over 100,000 units worldwide. The petition started by Ebeballistic is an attempt to demonstrate that there is a potential market for a remastered version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy. At the time of writing, the petition has earned 2,960 signatures.
"We’re planning to painstakingly recreate every detail of every stage and character in glorious 3D. Of course every fatality, brutality, friendship and animality will be there too," writes Eyeballistic. "The characters and stages will get a face lift to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second gameplay action through the power of Unreal Engine 5. We’ll even remake all of the music by giving it a modern cinematic sound that incorporates real instruments."
The studio goes on to speculate that if the project were greenlit, the remastered version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy would release on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. "We anticipate the game would cost $39.99 and it would include everything the original MK Trilogy had plus the standard online match making and world wide leaderboards," continues Eyeballistic. Neither Warner Bros. nor NetherRealm Studios, the current developer of the Mortal Kombat franchise, has commented on the petition.
Even if a remastered version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy doesn't come to fruition, fans can still enjoy the most recent game in the franchise, Mortal Kombat 11. Released in 2019, both critics and fans adored the game, with many praising its fluid and intuitive fighting mechanics, diverse roster and surprisingly compelling story mode. The game recently concluded its post-launch content which added characters like Rambo, RoboCop and Spawn.
