Dwayne Johnson claimed that the recently released action-comedy Red Notice is Netflix's biggest film ever.
On social media, Johnson teased the Netflix film with a clip himself and co-star Ryan Reynolds. "RED NOTICE has officially become THE BIGGEST MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF NETFLIX!!! In under two weeks, we've shattered all records and we have many weeks to go," Johnson explained. "THANK YOU GUYS and enjoy RED NOTICE this weekend around the world."
The film performed successfully during the first two weeks of its release, remaining in the Netflix Top 10 charts in 94 countries. Additionally, on its opening weekend, Red Notice saw the highest viewership for any Netflix movie. According to reports, Red Notice has been watched for 277.9 million hours around the world so far. Despite Johnson's claim, the movie officially falls slightly behind the 2018 hit Bird Box, which has been viewed for a total of 282 million hours. The Rock's post suggests that Red Notice has now overtaken Bird Box as Netflix's biggest movie ever, though the streaming service is yet to confirm whether this is true.
Red Notice follows John Hartley, an FBI profiler played by Johnson, who is forced to team up with infamous art thief Nolan Booth, played by Reynolds, to take down Sarah Black, played by Gal Gadot, who is a one of the greatest art thieves in the world.
Despite the film's popularity, Red Notice received unfavorable reviews from critics, who generally expressed disappointment, calling the plot confusing and lazy. Critics did note that the charisma of the main cast was a highlight of the movie, but that the final twist in the film felt obvious and disposable. Audiences seemed to disagree, however, describing the film as fun with a brilliant cast and enjoyable action sequences.
Director Rawson Marshall Thurber -- who is also known for Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and We're the Millers -- has already commented on the potential for a Red Notice sequel. In a recent interview, he explained, "I'm not working on the script for a sequel… I've certainly been noodling with what I would do for a follow-up and not to telltale out of school but yeah Netflix… we've been having those conversations."
