Wheel of Time's Moiraine Mocks Arrogant Men in New Clip | CBR

A new clip from Prime Video's upcoming fantasy series The Wheel of Time reveals more about the show's lore as Moiraine blames men for breaking the balance of the world.

The clip sees Moiraine, played by Rosamund Pike, preparing to journey out in pursuit of the Dragon Reborn. Moiraine narrates over the montage of her preparing to seek out the reincarnated soul, providing exposition for why her journey is so important. "The world is broken," she says. "Many, many years ago, men who were born with great power, believed they could cage darkness itself... The arrogance."

The event Moiraine is referring to in the series' lore is referred to as The Breaking of the World. Men capable of channeling the One Power attempted to tap into powers beyond them, causing something referred to as the taint. The character describes the consequences of the cataclysmic event, stating, "When they failed, the seas boiled, mountains were swallowed up, cities burnt, and the women of the Aes Sedai were left to pick up the pieces."

A detail about the breaking that was left somewhat unexplained in the clip was the taint itself. The reason the responsibility of cleaning up the mess fell to the women was due to the taint causing male channelers to go mad. In a recent trailer breakdown from showrunner Rafe Judkins, it was noted that "when men do use the One Power the consequences are huge." In the books, Moiraine does not blame all men or believe them inherently evil. It is simply a fact of Robert Jordan's world that male channelers caused the Breaking, and the ramifications it had on male channelers threw the world out of balance.

Another crucial plot point brought up in the clip is Moiraine's quest to find the reincarnation of the one known as the Dragon. She places a particular emphasis on this figure, referring to him as "the man who brought the Breaking of the World." As Moiraine states, they know only that the reincarnated being will be coming of age, but her quest to find them will involve tracking down their location and identifying them. The Dragon is a figure destined to bring either great good or further evil, but regardless, the Aes Sedai must race against the Dark One to find them first.

The first three episodes of The Wheel of Time Season 1 premiere Nov. 19 on Prime Video.
