X-Men: Inferno’s Big Return Changes Everything for Rogue | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Inferno #2, now on sale from Marvel.

The events of Inferno (by Jonathan Hickman, Valerio Schiti, David Curiel, and VC's Joe Sabino) have raised some potentially radical changes to Krakoa -- if the mutant nation can actually survive the events of Destiny's revival and elevation in the mutant government. Notably, much of her resurrection has been primarily focused on the response of Mystique, who has finally gotten to be reunited with her beloved wife.

But there's a major member of the X-Men who might also have a deep connection to the future-seeing mutant. The return of Destiny in the pages of Inferno might end up becoming a major game-changer for one of Krakoa's most important figures, and could even challenge her place in Krakoa.

A lingering element of the Krakoa era has been the question of Irene Adler -- Destiny. The powerful precog was one of the only mutants not revived by the Five at the formation of Krakoa, specifically at the request of Moira MacTaggert. Mystique's primary motivation has been her restoration, and the struggle to do so has led her to plan the fall of the mutant nation. Inferno sees Mystique finally successful in her plan, resulting in not just the revival of Destiny but her ascension to the Quiet Council. But Mystique wasn't the only mutant with who Destiny had a deep relationship -- namely, their adopted daughter, the heroic Rogue.

The future X-Man was only a young runaway when she was taken in by Mystique and Destiny. The couple effectively adopted Rogue and raised her to become a member of their plans with the Brotherhood. Although Rogue eventually had a far more complex relationship with Mystique, her sweet bond with Destiny even extended to her brief revival during the Necorsha storyline. She even had major effects on Rogue's life after her demise -- with Rogue's mission to find Destiny's diaries becoming the inciting incident for the formation of X-Treme X-Men. Besides potentially someone like her direct descendant Blindfold (who also hasn't been revived by the Five out of Moira's concern of reviving any precogs, as confirmed by Way of X), Rogue is one of the mutants who stands to have the most emotional reunion with one of the women who raised her.

It's such a potent concept that Inferno writer Jonathan Hickman has confirmed a subplot with Rogue was ultimately cut from Inferno. This suggests Destiny and her daughter may have had a reunion within the story itself -- and, according to Hickman himself, he remains "pretty bummed about that." Complicating matters is the fact that their adopted daughter is now officially one of the X-Men -- playing a prominent role in the restructured team that's been protecting the Earth. On top of that, she's been a player in Excalibur, becoming one of the most trusted allies of Captain Britain in her important work with Otherworld.

In short -- Rogue is deeply implanted in Krakoa and how it's developed, continuing to prove her time as a major Avenger was completely justified. While it's likely Rogue will see the restoration of someone she loves as a boon, if their mission ends up endangering Krakoa, then their family will already be threatened before it ever even gets the chance to reunite. But there's also the chance that Rogue (and the rest of Krakoa) learning more about the attempts to keep people like Destiny dead and why -- and it could even up convincing her to position her far more in opposition of the mutant nation that she's become so crucial in protecting.
