No Way Home Theory: Spider-Man May Have Sealed Venom’s Fate

The latest trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home is jam-packed with characters, including five villains from across the multiverse. Despite already having so many villains, the post-credits scene for Venom: Let There Be Carnage suggests another may be joining the fray. However, one line from Doctor Strange in the trailer may have sealed this character's fate and hinted at what's to come in future Venom movies.

The post-credits scene for Venom: Let There Be Carnage sees Eddie and Venom relaxing in bed watching TV. After a conversation about their pasts, Venom offers a taste of "80 billion light-years of hive knowledge across universes." The two are then seemingly transported into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the TV now showing J. Jonah Jameson exposing Tom Holland's Peter Parker as Spider-Man, as he did in the mid-credits scene of Far From Home.

Not only does this imply that Venom is now officially in the MCU, but perhaps due to the shared knowledge of other multiverse-Venoms, it seems he has the same hatred for Spider-Man as he does in the comics. Despite this scene, his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home has not been announced. And with all the leaks surrounding the movie, it's surprising that nothing has been heard of Tom Hardy on set.

With No Way Home needing one more villain to complete the iconic Sinister Six, paired with the Venom post-credits scene, it's understandable why audiences assume he will appear. However, Venom featuring in Spider-Man may not bode well for the character, all due to a line Doctor Strange said in the trailer. Around mid-way through, Doctor Strange says that the villains "all die fighting Spider-Man... It's their fate." This suggests that no matter what happens, each villain will always perish after becoming a rival of Spider-Man, which is true for almost all the villains seen in the trailer, as they died by the end of their respective movies even if Spider-Man didn't directly kill them.

And so, if Venom is to feature in No Way Home, what does this line mean for the character? It could be surprising to see Venom killed outside of his own franchise. But now that the character appears to be in the MCU, it means Spider-Man could feature in the next Venom movie. And if that is the case, who's to say Venom won't meet the fate which Doctor Strange views as inevitable?

With the introduction of a multiverse, there are more ways that this line could be interpreted. For instance, Venom could die in No Way Home, but continue as audiences know him in Venom 3. The post-credits scene for Let There Be Carnage could be showing a duplicate of Venom appearing in the MCU, rather than the character actually crossing the multiverse. This would mean if Venom dies in No Way Home, the original Venom outside the MCU would continue as if nothing happened.

Another possibility is that Venom will be exempt from this line because technically, he has already died at the hands of Spider-Man in another universe. During the end of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, Eddie Brock and Venom (played by Topher Grace) die during the final confrontation. Thus, there could be a loophole, meaning that Doctor Strange is still correct and that they do still die fighting Spider-Man. It just doesn't necessarily mean Hardy's version of Venom.

Either way, it seems Spider-Man: No Way Home is gearing up to be full of surprises and cameos. And hopefully, they are satisfying for fans, as the recent ticket sales show it to be Marvel's biggest release since Avengers: Endgame.

To see if the theory is right, Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters Dec. 17.
