The trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the follow-up to the Academy Award-winning 2018 film, Into the Spider-Verse, has finally dropped. The trailer racked up 8.3 million views in under 24 hours on Sony's Youtube channel, confirming that fans are still hungry for any and all Spider-Man-related content. And while Sony has been largely silent about the upcoming film, the trailer still reveals a lot of information.
At the end of the two and a half minutes, audiences learn that this film will be the first installment in a two-part collection, and Miles Morales, at one point, drops another nugget, saying, "My dorm room is much more... Adult," leading viewers to speculate that several years have passed since the events of the first film. However, the most important clue from the trailer is the wristband Gwen has on her wrist, as this device could very well be the Ticket to the Multiverse.
The Ticket to the Multiverse was created in the comics by two Gwen Stacys, one from Earth-65 and the other from Earth-3109, and made its first appearance in a tie-in comic for the Spider-Geddon event, Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider vo1 #3. After finding her way to Earth-3109, Spider-Gwen comes across that universes' Green Goblin, Gwen-3109. They duke it out, but after releasing Gwen-3109 from the Goblin persona, the two work together using their combined knowledge and some of Harry Osborn-3109's research to create the first Ticket to the Multiverse, which is bound to Gwen-65's DNA, meaning the bracelet will only work for her.
Prior to the creation of the Ticket to the Multiverse, individuals with Spider-Man-like abilities used the Web of Life and Destiny. Created by the "Great Weaver," the Web is what gives every Spider-powered person their powers and connects all the Earths and universes in Marvel comics. However, the Web of Life and Destiny was destroyed by the Spider-Man of Earth 44145, Norman Osborn.
What may be a version of the Ticket to the Multiverse in the Across the Spider-Verse trailer is first seen at minute marker 00:41. On Gwen's left wrist, there is a bracelet that she did not have in the first movie. And while she doesn't use the device in the trailer, there is another multi-versal bracelet seen in the back half of the trailer. At minute marker 1:58 Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O'Hara, bursts through a portal and catches Miles as he swings through the air of a new universe. Moments later, Spider-Man 2099 hits his bracelet and the two teleport into another universe. After slowing down and stopping the trailer, it is clear the bracelet reads 928 that is the number Earth from which Miguel O'Hara originates from. This means not only will the film not only be spending time in Spider-Man 2099's earth but that Gwen is not the only one who can use the bracelet.
There won't be a clear confirmation as to what this device is until further trailers or even the film's release. But after the events of the first film left Kingpin's supercollider destroyed, the narrative will need another device the Spiders can use to hop between realities. How it came to be and how the device's function is unclear, but whatever the case, the filmmakers will likely find something that rolls off the tongue a little better than "the Ticket to the Multiverse."
To see whether the device is the Ticket to the Multiverse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Part One will hit theaters on Oct. 7, 2022.
