Two new teasers for The Matrix Resurrections get very meta.
The TV spots, which were released on Twitter in one post by an unofficial account called The Matrix Brasil, callback to a number of iconic moments from the original trilogy, but provide their own twist on events. In the latter of the of the two trailers, for example, Neo and Trinity seem to watch their own actions on TV, with the former holding a black cat, like the one that appeared in The Matrix's déjà vu scene.
The Matrix Resurrections is the fourth film in the titular franchise and the first in nearly twenty years. Promotional materials for the franchise show Thomas Anderson/Neo (Keanu Reeves) living an ordinary life when Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) comes to awaken him to the reality that he's in the Matrix. Beyond that, the plot of The Matrix Resurrections is still shrouded in mystery. It's not even clear at this time just how Neo and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) are alive following their apparent deaths at the end of the original trilogy or what the nature of this new reality is.
Directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, The Matrix first released in 1999 and, like the fourth film, saw Neo learning the truth about his reality. Eventually, he discovers that he's the One, a being capable of manipulating the Matrix and freeing humankind from its imprisonment by machines. The movie released to critical acclaim and grossed $466.3 million against a budget of approximately $63 million. Two sequels followed in 2003: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. While both movies performed well financially, neither achieved the critical success of the original Matrix.
While a new Matrix filmed seemed unlikely for many years, Warner Bros. announced a fourth movie in 2019, with Lana Wachowski returning to direct. Production on the movie began in 2020, but was halted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. While production wrapped on principal photography in November of that same year, Jessica Henwick, who plays Bugs, noted the delay caused Wachowski to consider abandoning the film.
The Matrix Resurrection will release on Dec. 22 on HBO Max and in theaters as part of Warner Bros. plan to simultaneously release its 2021 titles on the streaming service. A Matrix Resurrections sequel has not been officially announced, but Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff remarked in October that one could happen if Lana Wachowski was onboard.
