Armie Hammer is backing out of an upcoming Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy film in the midst of controversial private messages that the actor allegedly sent suggesting that he was into sexual fantasies involving cannibalism.
The official response from a production spokesperson for the upcoming film, Shotgun Wedding (about a couple whose destination wedding gets held hostage by some bad guys), was that “Given the imminent start date of Shotgun Wedding, Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision.”
While that was the stated reason, it is quite likely that Hammer's departure from the movie has to do with a bizarre controversy surrounding the actor that broke over the weekend. The sexually explicit Instagram page, House of Effie, shared a series of private messages from a follower of the page, that were allegedly written by the Lone Ranger and Man From U.N.C.L.E. star.
The messages, which were alleged to have been sent between 2016 and early 2020, make a number of BDSM references as well as professing to enjoying cannibalism roleplaying and bloodsucking. In one of the alleged messages, Hammer writes, "I am 100% a cannibal. I want to eat you." He continues, "That's scary to admit. I've never admitted that before."
Over the weekend, someone shared an alleged private message from the woman who runs the House of Effie page where she admits that the whole thing was a joke, but the woman behind the account recently gave an interview where she insists that that private message was a fake created by one of Hammer's fans to protect the actor.
The unknown woman who is alleging that these private messages are for real has offered up a photo of a man with a tattoo on his hand that is similar to Hammer's as evidence that she is not making up the story or the messages. Hammer was married to his now ex-wife, Elizabeth Chambers, at the time of these alleged messages.
In 2017, Hammer caused a bit of a stir online when he liked a series of tweets featuring photos of BDSM sex acts. Hammer has also hinted at various "wild" sex habits in interviews with Playboy and Elle over the years.
UPDATED TO ADD: Hammer has now released a statement denouncing the allegations:
“I’m not responding to these bullshit claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic. Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that,” Hammer said in a statement.
