Blumhouse's The Black Phone Casts Lost Star | CBR

Blumhouse's upcoming film adaptation of Joe Hill's horrific tale will star Jeremy Davies.

The Black Phone is based on Joe Hill's short story of the same name, which was originally published in Hill's 2005 short story collection 20th Century Ghosts. While Davies is confirmed to star in the film, his role is currently unknown, as confirmed by Deadline.

Emmy-winning Davies is a prolific film and television actor known for portraying Daniel Faraday on Lost and Dickie Bennett on Justified. Davies has also portrayed John Deegan in the Arrowverse's three-part "Elseworlds" crossover event and had supporting roles in Twister and Saving Private Ryan.

Scott Derrickson (Doctor StrangeSinister) will direct the movie based on a script he co-wrote with writing partner C. Robert Cargill. Derrickson and Cargill previously worked together on Sinister 2 as co-writers. In October, Cargill tweeted about his enthusiasm for working on the Blumhouse project alongside Derrickson and shared the film's synopsis.

"Joe's short story is amazing," he wrote. "Scott and I have been talking about making it for almost a decade now. A kidnapped kid. A creepy, soundproofed basement. An ancient, disconnected phone. Then, when night falls, the phone rings."

Derrickson helmed Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange and was set to direct the upcoming sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but left due to creative differences and was replaced by acclaimed horror director Sam Raimi.

In addition to The Black Phone, Derrickson is attached to several fantastical projects. He will co-write and direct Bermuda, a mystery-thriller about the infamous Bermuda Triangle. Chris Evans is reportedly in talks to star in the film. Derrickson is also working on a sequel to Jim Henson's 1986 film Labyrinth

A cult fantasy-adventure that initially bombed at the box office, Labyrinth starred Jennifer Connelly as a teenaged girl who sets out to rescue her baby brother from an elaborate maze after he's kidnapped by the charismatic Jareth the Goblin King (the late David Bowie). It's yet to be confirmed if Connelly will return in the Labyrinth sequel or if Derrickson plans to recast the role of the Goblin King or omit the character altogether.

The Black Phone is currently in pre-production. It has yet to receive an official release date.
