While the team hasn't always got along the best, they've always stepped up when the chips were down. Many great heroes have called themselves Avengers, with some having longer tenures than others.

10 Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel Universe and has become a more important hero as the years have gone by. The good Captain first joined the Avengers back when she was still Ms. Marvel and found her place on the team before Rogue drained her of her powers. After bumming around the galaxy for a few years with the Starjammers as Binary, she would rejoin the team.

Captain Marvel's time as an Avenger has been full of ups and downs and in recent years, and she has become even more important to the team as her power and stature in the Marvel Universe has grown. With her amazing powers, she's become a clutch player for the team.

9 Black Widow

Black Widow is one of the top spies in the Marvel Universe and has more than proven she has what it takes to be one of the best Avengers. First clashing with Iron Man, she would eventually see the error of her ways, working for SHIELD and joining the Avengers. Even without superpowers, Black Widow proved to be one of the team's most formidable members and even the led group for a time.

Black Widow has worked with the Avengers on and off for years. While her skills have proven valuable to the team, her take no prisoners attitude has caused some problems. However, for most Avengers, there is no one other than Black Widow they'd rather have watching their back.

8 Black Panther

As the leader of the nation of Wakanda, Black Panther has always been one of the most important heroes in the world. This made it a no brainer for him to join the Avengers. Many of his early tenures with the team were rather contentious, as Black Panther didn't like following orders and that his first loyalty was to Wakanda, but he was always an asset to the team.

Over the years, Black Panther has changed a lot and that change has affected the way he sees the Avengers. His most recent tenure with the team is his best yet, as he's taken his place leading the group, the perfect position for a man born to lead.

7 Vision

Vision began his time with the Avengers began as an enemy of the team. Created by Avengers arch foe Ultron, he was meant to be a plant on the team and destroy them from within, but he was able to overcome his programming and helped the team battle his evil "father." Over the years, Vision would become one of the team's most stalwart members, saving the day on numerous occasions.

There are few Avengers who have been as important to the team as Vision. He's spent most of his life with the team and has become pretty synonymous with the group. His life has had lots of ups and downs but one the thing that hasn't changed is his devotion to saving lives.

6 Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch joined the Avengers during the first recruitment drive. Her and her brother Quicksilver joined the group together after breaking away from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. While the twins would both become important to the Avengers, Scarlet Witch spent more time with the team, using her amazing powers in the battle against evil.

Her time with the Avengers was the best and worst of her life, but even when she would lose her way, the team was always there for her. Her reality bending powers have made her one of the team's most powerful members and with power likes hers on their side, there are few who can match the team.

5 Hawkeye

Hawkeye is just a guy with a bow and arrow, but he's proven to be one of the most dedicated Avengers of them all. At first, his flippant attitude and defiance of authority made him the team's bad boy, but as the years went on, he became more of a team player and a huge asset to the team. He even ended up founding the West Coast Avengers, proving that he could lead a team of Avengers.

Hawkeye may not seem like the kind of hero who would be an integral part of the Avengers but his unmatched bravery and combat skills have made him one of the greatest Avengers of them all.

4 Captain America

Captain America owes his existence in the modern world to the Avengers— they were the ones who found him frozen in a block of ice. He would jump into the fray with the gusto he was known for during World War II and eventually became the team's leader. This role suited Cap perfectly and he became known as one of the greatest leaders in the Marvel Universe.

Over the years, Captain America's inspiring leadership, impressive tactical acumen, and unmatched fighting skills have more than proven that he's one of the most important members of the team. Even when he's not leading the team, his acuity on the battlefield makes him one of the team's MVPs.

3 Wasp

One of the founding members of the Avengers, Wasp joined the team with her boyfriend, Hank Pym. While her powers and flighty nature may not have made her seem very important to the team, Wasp proved herself to be one of the team's most important members over the years, including becoming the first woman to lead the team.

Wasp has dealt with a lot during her time as an Avenger but has never let the trials and tribulations of being a superhero make her lose her lust for life. While she may not seem like much, she's one of the Avengers' most important members.

2 Thor

Thor's battles with his brother Loki are pretty much the whole reason why the Avengers started; he needed help against the God of Mischief and got that help from the greatest heroes of the day: Iron Man, Hulk, Wasp, and Ant-Man. From there, Thor would become the team's muscle, using his powers as the God of Thunder and the mighty hammer Mjolnir to crush all who would endanger the innocent.

Thor has often been the one member whose interventions meant the difference between life and death for his fellow Avengers; there have been plenty of battles the team would have lost without his help. There are few members more important to the Avengers than the Mighty Thor.

1 Iron Man

Iron Man has been with the team since the beginning and the fact that the Avengers stayed around has everything to do with him. Iron Man opened his home to the team and used his vast wealth to finance the team, giving them a headquarters and even paying members of the team a stipend so they could focus on their superheroics. On top of that, Stark Industries technology played a huge part in giving the team what they needed.

Iron Man's contributions to the Avengers are probably the single most important ones of them all, even if he could be quite shady about other things. By supplying the team with what he did, he enabled them to stay together and become the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
