Black-owned comic publisher Black Sands Entertainment shared that it raised more than $1 million in December 2020 on WeFunder, exceeding the company's fundraising goal.
The independent publisher shared that the newly raised funds from fans will improve Black Sands Entertainment's web-app and help growing projects throughout 2021, including the creation of more animated adventures for its hundreds of thousands of fans to purchase.
Established in 2016 by Manuel and Geiszel Godoy, two Army veterans who aimed to develop and release the Kids 2 Kings comic series, Black Sands Entertainment currently boasts a roster of five titles, with plans to release two more titles in 2021. Among the company's best-sellers are Cosmic Girls, Black Sands and The First Pharaoh.
Since 2016, Black Sands Entertainment has sold over 60,000 units of creative work. Recently, the company branched out into creating animated television adaptations for its titles as well, which are hosted on its YouTube channel and available for purchase on its site.
Black Sands Entertainment's YouTube channel has over 100,000 digital followers, and the channel features updates on current work, interviews with its owners/creators and animated episodes of Black Sands, The Seven Kingdoms.
In part, its company's mission statement reads, "We offer a strong focus on history before slavery and the rich legacies our African ancestors left us. We fight every day to counter the Hollywood agenda-based narrative."
In addition to hitting the $1 million fundraiser mark in December, Black Sands sold more than 30,000 comics and DVDs inspired by the Black Sands series directly to consumers via the company’s website in 2020 alone. The company's animated projects have previously been selected by the Hollywood Just4Shortz film festival, while the Kids 2 Kings comic book series was also recognized as one of the best indie comic series of 2017.
Black Sands' next goal is to raise funds for a fully animated DVD on Kickstarter, which will begin on May 1.
