Demon Slayer: Every Major Demon, Ranked By Likability | CBR

Demon Slayer is not a typical shonen anime with baseless antagonists. From the main character Tanjiro Kamado to the very demons he slays, every character has a piece of something that draws audiences to their story. Thus, many aspects of the anime garnered praiseーnot only because of the story, but the characters themselves.

Even if their backstories may not have been all fleshed-out, many of their character traits helped fans loveーor hateーthem. Here’s a look at the major demons in Demon Slayer and where they would sit in terms of likability.

10 Hand Demon

As the show’s primary antagonist, Muzan is expected to be evil incarnateーbut the Hand Demon is a bit different in that regard.

As a simple minor antagonist, there is no denying how much the Hand Demon shocked fans when he revealed he went out of his way to kill Urokodaki’s students. He did so out of pure spite and did so with great pleasure which caused fans to dislike him as one of the first demons fans were introduced to.

9 Muzan

Muzan is one of the least liked demons from the anime. It is no surprise why, as he has done many horrible things through the anime, as well as all the sins he has committed.

Even so, fans were left disappointed, seeing how the backstories of several minor characters were explained, but Muzan’s motivations were shrouded in mystery. The manga, however, happened to shed more light on Muzan’s past.

8 Rui

Rui definitely had one of the most tragic backstories from the anime and even featured one of the best fights from the show. Despite that, it was hard to sympathize with him. This is because he allowed himself to be manipulated by Muzanーdespite knowing the truth.

Not to mention that even after knowing how it felt to have no one to love him, Rui created and continued a toxic and abusive relationship with his entire foster/adopted family.

7 Susamaru

She was brash, aggressive, and very demanding. She was the opposite of “think first, act later” and a lot of fans found it hard to like a demon that was cowardly enough to ambush their target and force them into submission.

Of course, that changed when it was revealed she was most likely converted into a demon when she was a little girl, which meant she never had the chance to grow into an actual adult human being.

6 Sister Spider Demon

After accepting Rui’s offer, she gave up every part of her past and identity in order to become part of his family. She did everything he ordered her to do, but despite all of her best efforts, all that Rui did was abuse her, both mentally and physically.

Yes, she did kill many humans, but she did not do it because she wanted toーshe did it because she knew Rui would kill her otherwise. It was a hard ultimatum, but in the end, she had a bit more humanity than the other members of the Spider family.

5 Mother Spider Demon

Despite showing no emotions while killing humans, she showed an entirely different side in the presence of Rui. It is not hard to see why, seeing how she was constantly abused and tortured by him, as well as the Father Spider Demon, for never being strong enough.

This is why when she realized she was going to be killed, she was at peace with herself since she knew she would no longer be abused by anyone. Her fate is a melancholic one, but the peaceful death Tanjiro gave her was well-deserved.

4 Drum Demon

He was perhaps one of the least sadistic and cruel demons from the series. All he wanted was to live in peace, perhaps which was why he chose an isolated house to occupy. He aimed at consuming enough humans so that he could be back in Muzan’s good graces.

He even avoided getting into a one-on-one fight with Tanjiro till the very end, instead preferring to use his drums to throw Tanjiro (quite literally) off balance.

3 Yushiro

Yushiro was converted into a demon by Tamayo and ever since then, he pledged undying loyalty to her.

The demon is a true tsundere who dislikes showing any emotion except anger and frustration. However, on the inside, he does enjoy being treated well, as is showed by his reaction when Nezuko pets him on his head.

2 Tamayo

She is shown to be a demon that is kind, altruistic, and very intelligent. Not only is she able to create a demon that consumes a minimum amount of demon blood, but also one that is free of Muzan’s control.

She instantly agrees to help Tanjiro with his goal of turning Nezuko back to human and even offers to provide shelter to Nezuko, while Tanjiro went out hunting for demons.

1 Nezuko

It should come as no surprise that Nezuko would be the most liked demon. Despite her adorable appearance and often child-like behavior, she actually is a fierce demon who does not hesitate to protect the ones she loves.

Perhaps one of the best qualities about her is how instead of constantly having to be saved (because she’s a female character), it is often she herself who has to save Tanjiro whenever he needs aid.
