The live-action adaptation of Pinocchio has snagged an alum from another live-action Disney project.
Luke Evans is slated to join the cast of Pinocchio, which currently features Tom Hanks as the kindly carpenter Geppetto. Evans will be portraying the Coachman, who ferries Pinocchio and other young boys to Pleasure Island — where they are transformed into donkeys.
This is not the first live-action Disney project that Evans has been a part of. He portrayed Gaston in the 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast, which featured a star-studded cast, including Emma Watson and Dan Stevens. Evans is set to reprise the role in a potential spinoff series for Disney+ alongside Josh Gad as Gaston's bumbling servant LeFou.
It was previously announced at Disney's 2020 Investor Day event that Pinocchio, alongside Peter Pan & Wendy, will bypass theaters in favor of a debut on Disney+. Disney has made no secret of its plans to bolster the streaming service, particularly in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Over 30 series focused on the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, as well as Pixar and other Disney properties, are set to debut on Disney+ over the next few years.
Pinocchio will be a live-action retelling of the 1940 classic Disney story. Robert Zemeckis will direct the film and co-write the screenplay with Chris Weitz. Although the movie was originally announced in 2015, it does not have an official release date.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Pinocchio stars Tom Hanks and Luke Evans. The movie will premiere on Disney+, but has yet to receive a release date.
