Do You Remember the Mad Max Video Game? | CBR

Mad Max became an instant hit when it debuted in 1979. Although the movie franchise is highly regarded among many gamers, few know about the 2015 video game adaptation. Unlike most movie spin-off games, Mad Max successfully captures the same pulse-pounding tension of the movies while immersing players in an incredible, dystopian wonderland.

The Mad Max video game features a standalone plot that doesn't intertwine with any of the four films. It follows Max after a group of bloodthirsty raiders strip him of his belongings and leave him to die in the desert. As he wanders through the barren wasteland, Max stumbles upon a strange auto mechanic who agrees to help him seek vengeance on the savage raiders who wronged him. The tenacious duo begin building a customized car called the Magnum Opus and venture out on their quest for revenge.

Admittedly, Mad Max's story is average at best. It's a bit perplexing and isn't well explained. However, the game makes up for its lackluster story with exceptional gameplay. It plays like a faster-paced Days Gone and mixes open-world survival elements with high octane action sequences. There are even hints of vehicle combat for fans of the Twisted Metal series. Players are thrust into an over-the-top, post-apocalyptic thrill ride that doesn't let up until the very end.

Much like the Mad Max film series, the video game adaptation puts a heavy emphasis on cars and other off-road vehicles. Players can gather spare parts while scavenging the wasteland and turn their run-down clunker into a menacing war machine. Getting lost in Max's garage customizing the Magnum Opus with new weapons and upgrades is surprisingly rewarding and can be just as entertaining as exploring the barbaric wasteland.

Mad Max is one of the many great games that seemed to fly under the radar upon release. Although it succeeded most people's expectations, the game went relatively unnoticed while the movie became a runaway success. It could be due to the oversaturation of dystopian open-world games launching over the PlayStation 4’s lifespan. Many gamers are starting to grow tired of the genre, causing many gems to fall through the cracks, especially when Mad Max launched in 2015.

Nevertheless, Mad Max is a fantastic open-world game that is adored by the few people who played it. Those who haven't may also want to check it out.
