EXCLUSIVE: Jiang Ziya Trailer Promises Breathtaking Animated Adventure

Well Go USA has given CBR an exclusive look at the trailer for Jiang Ziya, an epic Chinese fantasy film centering on a celestial commander and the choices he makes in protecting the mortal world from the Nine-tailed Fox Demon.

The trailer shows off the movie's vibrant CG animation and provides an introduction to the central characters and their story. The villain of the piece is a powerful shapeshifter referred to as Nine-tailed, drawing on Eastern myths about foxes as magical trickster gods, and she has already "brought chaos to the world" when the action begins.

Jiang Ziya vows to lead the gods to defeat Nine-tailed, but when he finds he cannot kill her without sacrificing an innocent young girl, he refuses. Exiled as punishment, Jiang Ziya must seek a new path and choose his own destiny.

A variety of mythical creatures make an appearance in the trailer, from rampant monsters and ghostly spirits, to a soldier resembling a minotaur and a cute furry beast who seems to become Jiang Ziya's faithful animal companion. Scenery is likewise varied, moving from remote snowscapes to fiery darkness.

The film is aimed at a family audience, and uses its visual effects to bring ancient Chinese legends to life. Jiang Ziya's rebellion against his celestial origins is emphasized in the trailer, with his voiceover claiming, "We all deserve to live free from the yoke of oppression. We all deserve the truth."

The film's synopsis can be read below:

To earn his place amongst the gods, celestial army commander Jiang Ziya must vanquish a terrifying fox demon threatening the very existence of the mortal realm. After learning the creature’s fate is tied to that of a young girl, Jiang Ziya disobeys Heaven’s edict and spares the demon, resulting in his banishment to the mortal realm. Ten years later, he is given one more chance to complete the task, and Jiang Ziya must decide: is joining the ranks of the heavens worth the price of one innocent life?

The second chapter in the magical Fengshen Cinematic Universe, Jiang Ziya releases February 9 on Digital, Blu-ray and DVD from Well Go USA Entertainment. The movie was written by Ceci Shieh and directed by Teng Cheng and Wei Li, and stars Zheng Xi, Yang Ning, Tute Hameng, Yan Meme, Hi Guanlin and Shan Xin.
