My Hero Academia: 5 Students Who Don't Deserve To Be In Class 1-A (& 5 Who Do)

My Hero Academia depicts a world where supernatural Quirks have become the norm, and talented adolescents may qualify for elite schools such as the famed U.A. and its rival, Shiketsu. In those schools, only the very best and brightest may stand out, and class 1-A at U.A. is the best of the best.

Students must pass practical and written exams to make it into a class like that, and as a whole, My Hero Academia has introduced viewers to many hero students who would earn a slot in that class, and a few who would not. If all on-screen students were pooled together, who would make it into class 1-A, and who wouldn't? Some existing class 1-A students might keep their spot, and others might wash out.

10 DESERVES A SPOT: Fumikage Tokoyami, The Shadowy Hero

One of the class 1-A students who should definitely keep their spot is Fumikage Tokoyami, a powerhouse with an unusual Quirk. Fumikage's ability, Dark Shadow, is fast and agile, and it hits hard, especially at night. It can even speak and think for itself, unusual for a Quirk.

Fumikage's case is strengthened by his mature and calm attitude, and he is very cooperative and methodical, too. Bit by bit, Fumikage is training hard to get stronger, and there is no way he'll just coast on his Quirk. That's class 1-A material.

9 DOESN'T DESERVE A SPOT: Mashirao Ojiro, The Tailed Hero

One of the melee students of U.A. is Mashirao Ojiro, a boy with a mutant-type Quirk. His ability is straightforward, taking the form of a thick, strong tail that can act as a fifth limb. With it, Mashirao can maneuver with ease and deliver strikes from unexpected angles.

Mashirao makes the most of it, but all in all, this martial artist student hero is unimpressive, and he has had practically no glory moments at all. He might even rank right near the bottom of class 1-A in most regards.

8 DESERVES A SPOT: Ibara Shiozaki, The Vine Hero

One of the students of class 1-B is the vine-haired girl Ibara Shiozaki, who made her first big debut during the U.A. sports festival. She went up against class 1-A's Denki Kaminari in a duel, and she handled him quite well.

Ibara doesn't like bloodshed or brute force. Instead, she uses her hair's thick vines to capture and restrain her enemies, and Ibara can even thrust them underground and have them pop up to take enemies by surprise. Such a powerful Quirk has all kinds of uses.

7 DOESN'T DESERVE A SPOT: Mei Hatsume, The Tinkering Girl

There is a good reason why Mei Hatsume is not enrolled in class 1-A or class 1-B. Mei is a very smart girl who can invent a wide variety of gadgets, armored suits and more for her fellow heroes, but battle is simply not her way.

Mei did use her own gear to "fight" Tenya Iida during the sports festival, but that was just to show off to the business reps who were watching, and Mei knew that Tenya wouldn't cause her serious harm. Mei doesn't have what it takes to fight actual villains in a life-or-death battle. Fortunately, she doesn't have to, either.

6 DESERVES A SPOT: Inasa Yoarashi, The Windy Hero

At one point in time, Inasa Yoarashi was competing with Shoto Todoroki for a spot in UA., but after Shoto rudely snubbed him, Inasa decided to enroll at Shiketsu instead. U.A. missed out on a real powerhouse, in hindsight.

Inasa is a first-year student who is on par with anyone from class 1-A. He can generate powerful gales of air with his Quirk, with both brute force and incredible control and finess. He's easily class 1-A material.

5 DOESN'T DESERVE A SPOT: Toru Hagakure, The Invisible Hero

In all fairness, Toru Hagakure does have what it takes to be enrolled at U.A., but perhaps not in class 1-A in particular. She is better off as a support hero than a front-line fighter, since her physical abilities are unremarkable at best.

Toru is more effective as a scout or raider, especially when in costume, and she can wreak havoc behind enemy lines. Her grades are unimpresive, though, and she seemed to pass U.A.'s strict tests more by luck than anything. She'd be more at home in a less demanding class.

4 DESERVES A SPOT: Kyoka Jiro, The Earphone Jack Hero

Kyoka Jiro named herself after her distinct Quirk: Earphone Jack. Although Kyoka's physical strength is below average, she can win a fight without throwing a single punch. Her earphone jacks can be inserted into the ground and blast it apart with sonic waves, throwing her enemies right off their feet.

On defense, Kyoka can plug her Quirk into the walls, floor or ceiling to hear other people moving around, meaning she can help her team avoid traps or slip out of a building undetected. Kyoka is highly competent on offense and defense alike, so she keeps her place in class 1-A.

3 DOESN'T DESERVE A SPOT: Hitoshi Shinso, The Brainwashing Boy

One of the gen-ed students at U.A. is the moody boy Hitoshi Shinso, who longs to be a hero despite his personality and his insidious Quirk. If he can get people to verbally respond to him (typically when answering questions), he can force them to do certain things when told.

However, Shinso might have trouble defending himself against serious villains, and there's no guarantee that he could get villains to respond to him correctly for his Quirk's sake. That, combined with his uninspiring personality, make him unsuited for class 1-A.

2 DESERVES A SPOT: Tenya Iida, The Runner Hero

The class rep of class 1-A is Tenya Iida, and he has certainly earned that position. Tenya is fiercely determined to become a great hero, mainly so he can follow his big brother Tensei's footsteps. He even borrowed Tensei's hero name, Ingenium.

Tenya's qualifcations are many. He has not only the proper motivation, but also solid leadership/coaching skills, excellent grades (second behind Momo), strict discipline and a clear idea of right and wrong. He's also a formidble melee hero, being able to run with incredible speed and deliver heavy kicks.

1 DOESN'T DESERVE A SPOT: Katsuki Bakugo, The Explosive Hero

What's this? How could the powerhouse Katsuki Bakugo not qualify for class 1-A after all? The problem isn't his quirk or his wits; he has a powerful, explosion-based Quirk and a tactical mind that almost rivals Izuku's own. No problems there.

The real issue is Bakugo's personality and behavior. He's not just competitive; he's downright petty, reckless and confrontational, and he's a destablizing element in class 1-A. He'll even pick serious fights and trample over his friends on his quest to surpass All Might, and the other students of class 1-A deserve better than to have such a troublemaker among them. If Bakugo can get his head cooled down a bit, then he'd definitely deserve to be in class 1-A after all. Class 1-A students need to set an example as heroes-to-be.
