Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie is based on the Nickelodeon animated series that debuted in 2018. The reboot of the Ninja Turtles has the foursome -- Raph, Mikey, Donnie and Leo -- gaining new, mystical powers to go along with their martial arts skills. Rise retools the team for the 21st century, giving them a different look with animation in a different style.

It's the latest incarnation of the Mirage Studios indie comic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles launched in 1984 from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Initially a spoof of then-popular themes in '80s comics -- ninjas, anthropomorphic animals, mutants and teenage superheroes -- the TMNT grew into a media franchise that spanned comic books, animated cartoons, live-action movies, video games, toys and a comic strip. Their last previous film outing was 2019's Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was a collaboration between Nickelodeon, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment.
