Riverdale Synopsis Teases the Seven-Year Time Jump | CBR

With Riverdale Season 5 officially underway, The CW has revealed the synopsis for the season's fourth episode -- "Chapter Eighty: Purgatorio" -- which teases the seven-year time jump that was previously promised for the Archie Comics-based television drama.

Set to air on Wednesday, Feb. 10, "Purgatorio" sees main protagonist Archie Andrews return to his hometown of Riverdale following a seven-year absence, only to discover that it is but a shell of what it once was, and now under the control of Hiram Lodge. Toni Topaz fills Archie in on what exactly has been going on during his time away, leading Archie to reach out to the rest of his friends, asking them to return home as well.

Per the full synopsis for "Chapter Eighty: Purgatorio,"

SEVEN-YEAR TIME JUMP — After spending seven years away from Riverdale, Archie (KJ Apa) returns to find the town is now under Hiram Lodge’s (Mark Consuelos) grip and on the verge of becoming a ghost town. When Toni (Vanessa Morgan) catches him up on what’s been going on, Archie reaches out to the rest of the gang to return home. Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Madelaine Petsch, Casey Cott, Charles Melton, Drew Ray Tanner and Erinn Westbrook also star. Steve Adelson directed the episode written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (#504). Original airdate 2/10/2021.

Riverdale Season 5 premiered on Jan. 20 with "Chapter Seventy-Seven: Climax." Fittingly, "Purgatorio" and the time jump therein will immediately follow "Chapter Seventy-Nine: Graduation," which is set to air on Feb. 3 and -- as the title implies -- will center around Archie, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge and Jughead Jones' graduation from Riverdale High. ("Graduation" will also explain the impending absence of Jughead's dad, F.P. Jones, with actor Skeet Ulrich preparing to depart the series.) A significant time jump for Riverdale was originally teased by showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa back in May following the conclusion of Season 4. Then, in August, series star Lili Reinhart -- who plays Betty -- confirmed the jump would, in fact, be seven years.
