The CW has released an official trailer for the upcoming fourth and final season of its DC television series Black Lightning -- and as far as main protagonist Jefferson Pierce is concerned, his superhero alter-ego is a thing of the past.
The trailer opens on Jefferson mourning at a grave, presumably that of his close friend Detective Bill Henderson, who perished in Black Lightning's Season 3 finale. "No matter how hard I try to protect my family, it will always end in tragedy. I can no longer be the man I was," Jefferson says. "Black Lightning was trying to save the world, I'm just trying to save my family," he continues, ultimately declaring, "Black Lightning's dead."
Jefferson's foster father, Peter Gambi, takes exception to this decision, saying, "Freeland will be lost without Black Lighting," to which Jefferson responds, "Freeland is lost!" As the trailer concludes, Peter continues to plead his case. "You are a symbol of justice for a city that badly needs it," he says.
Despite Jefferson seemingly hanging up his Black Lightning suit for good, Anissa Pierce/Thunder and Jennifer Pierce/Lightning appear to be holding down the fort as far as costumed crimefighting is concerned. Furthermore, while Black Lightning is set to end with Season 4, a spinoff starring the character Khalil Payne/Painkiller is currently in the works at The CW.
Black Lightning stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, China Anne McClain as Jennifer Pierce, Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce/Thunder, Christine Adams as Lynn Stewart, Marvin "Krondon" Jones III as Tobias Whale and James Remar as Peter Gambi. Season 4 premieres Feb. 8, 2021 on The CW.
