The CW's Superman & Lois recently released its newest trailer. The sixty-second promo showcases muted color tones, rural landscapes and ominous character lines. The network has seemingly abandoned its usual bright superhero themes found in the likes of The Flash and Supergirl, channeling the darker vibes of Man of Steel.
Though Clark Kent and Lois Lane have faced other-worldly battles, it seems they'll be facing more common trials in Superman & Lois, the biggest being their move from bustling Metropolis to Clark's hometown, Smallville. One question looming in the minds of fans is why the couple, along with their teenage sons, Jordan and Jonathan, make the move. However, the trailer may have hinted at the reason.
A shot in the trailer shows a worried Clark and Lois walking through the Daily Planet, as a voiceover from Lois saying "lost jobs" is heard at the same time. This line implies that the two were fired or laid off from the Daily Planet, and this could be the reason for their move to Smallville.
Showrunner/executive producer Todd Helbig hinted at why the Kent family returned to Smallville during the Superman & Lois DC FanDome panel. He said, "[T]he town that I grew up in had a business leave that sort of affected everybody in the town, and the town started to slowly dry up. It felt very current with recent years after 2008. So we wanted to tell a story where you have the parents after this tragic event happens move back to Smallville and find that it's easier to raise kids maybe in a place where life isn't so hectic as it is in Metropolis."
It's possible that the "tragic event" Helbig spoke of is Clark and Lois's lost jobs. Metropolis could be suffering a sort of recession, and the pair are collateral damage. Moving to rural Smallville may give them more employment options and a much better cost of living. However, the exact reason why the two lost their jobs is not revealed. For that, fans will have to wait for the series to air on February 23.
Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Dylan Walsh, Alex Garfin, Jordan Elsass, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Inde Navarrette and Wolé Parks. The series premieres Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 8 pm ET on The CW.
