The image of Senator Bernie Sanders sitting in a folding chair, wearing a winter coat and a pair of woolen mittens at U.S. President Joe Biden's inauguration has stormed the internet. The uber-viral meme featuring the Vermont senator and his practical clothing has inspired countless images across Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms.
The pop culture references have been numerous, placing Sanders in video games, movies, TV shows, at historical events and in various locations around the world. He's shown up as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring, in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, hanging out with Deadpool, playing chess in The Queen's Gambit and scores of other pop culture themed images.
Appearing on Late Night with Seth Myers, Bernie said in reference to his attire, "I was just sitting there trying to keep warm, trying to pay attention to what was going on."
Sanders is no stranger to the meme world. While running against Biden in 2020, a fundraising video featuring the 79-year-old politician went viral when it was remixed into several different situations and memes.
President Biden's inauguration will be remembered for many different reasons. If the internet has anything to say about it, Sanders and his mittens will certainly be one of those reasons.
