As many are aware, the year 2021 is set to be an exciting one for romance anime fans. This year has many amazing releases to come, including everything from new seasons of popular romance anime to brand new series. Whether someone is a fan of shonen or shojo, a good romance plot is something that everyone can enjoy.

Throughout this year, fans who enjoy romance have plenty to look forward to in anime movies and series alike. After the downer that was 2020, what the world needs in 2021 is love, sweet (anime) love.

10 Fruits Basket: The Final

The third and final season of Fruits Basket is set to be released sometime this year, but an official date has not been revealed by Funimation. The second season ended with a huge surprise leaving fans readily waiting to know what happens next.

The series follows an orphaned young woman by the name of Tohru who begins staying with three strange men who are a part of a family possessed by Chinese zodiac animals, who turn out to need her help just as much as she needs theirs.

9 Uzaki-chan Wants To Hang Out!

Based on the assumed production schedule, fans are expecting a second season release of Uzaki-chan Wants To Hang Out! sometime this March. It's a slice of life anime that perfectly mixes comedy and romance.

The series focuses on Hana Uzaki who sets out to turn the life of introverted, Shinichi Sakurai, from a boring one to a thrilling and fun-filled one. Although her extroverted nature and constant desire to hang out with Shinichi may come off as annoying, she tries her best and she means well.

8 My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom!

My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom! is a series that premiered its first season from early to mid-2020 and is set to premiere its second season later this year.

The story centers around Catarina Claes, a young woman born into nobility who finds herself reborn into the otome game, Fortune Lover. Within the game, she is given the character identity of a villainess with a horrible fate, one she struggles to avoid at all costs.

7 Date A Live

This particular series began in 2013 and has run for three seasons. Its success has lead to the release of a fourth season that was announced by the creator, Joushi Tachibana, to be during the spring of 2021.

Date A Live IV will continue the story of Shido Itsuka, a young man in high school who is given the responsibility of sealing the Spirits that cause devastating quakes. He completes his task by making them fall in love and kissing them, which seals them in another dimension.

6 Horimiya

Horimiya is a new series that aired its first episode on January 9, 2021, in Japan. It's a slice of life anime that consists of 13 episodes showing an unlikely pair of high school students, named Kyoko Hori and Izumi Miyamura, who unexpectedly encounter one another outside of school.

They quickly realize that their school persona and their real-life persona differ greatly causing them to create a pact to not reveal one another true identities.

5 Sword Art Online: Progressive

Many fans consider this upcoming movie to be a reboot of the widely loved series, Sword Art Online. The movie does not have an official release date yet but is set to be released in theaters in Japan later this year.

It depicts the story of two lone wolves, Kirito and Asuna, who, despite their difference, must find a way to work together and survive inside the deadly game. It takes place at the start of their adventure through the first level of Aincrad.

4 Beastars

On January 6, 2021, in Japan, the second season of Beastars was released, finally putting all the viewers waiting in anticipation at ease. Licensed by Netflix, the first season of the series was able to air outside of Japan creating a rather large fan base.

The series is about Legoshi, a wolf, who attends Cherryton Academy where there is a clear divide between predators and prey. The sudden murder of Tem, an alpaca, further widens the divide and among the chaos, Legoshi meets his forbidden love, a small rabbit named, Haru.

3 Rent-A-Girlfriend

The first episode of the 12-episode first season of Rent-A-Girlfriend premiered in June of 2020 and garnered a lot of attention, practically guaranteeing the release of the second season in late 2021. It follows Kazuya Kinoshita who decides to use a mobile app to rent a girlfriend after dealing with his recent breakup.

After going on a date with his new girlfriend, Chizuru Mizuhara, and reading her reviews, he leaves a low rating which angers her. However, his sickly grandmother shows a liking to her so he decides to keep her around to keep up appearances with family.

2 Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

In late 2020, Funimation announced that season three of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War was confirmed to be released sometime this year. The anime begins with the power couple, Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya, who are president and vice-president of their student council.

Despite their feelings for one another being apparent, they begin a contest to see who can get the other to confess their love first, resulting in a series of romantic shenanigans and schemes.

1 The Quintessential Quintuplets

Released on January 8, 2021, the second season of The Quintessential Quintuplets continues the story of Futaro Uesugi, a young man dealing with grief, personal and financial issues, who is hired to be a tutor for rich quintuplet sisters.

He quickly sees that the girls are unfocused and a lot to handle, but as he develops personal relationships with each of the sisters, he manages to earn their respect and slowly but surely make them better students.
