WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Watch, Season 1, Episode 4, "Twilight Canyons," now available on BBC.
Captain Vimes (Richard Dormer) can't catch a break on BBC's The Watch as his old buddy, Carcer Dun, is embarking on an apocalyptic mission. The evil wizard wants to burn Ankh-Morpork to the ground, leaving Vimes desperate as he's short of cops on the force.
Now, as he tries to use his minimal resources, Vimes realizes there are more enemies than first assumed. However, much to his shock, the series' newest villain is its deadliest one yet, and it's someone he thought had his best interests at heart.
The new villain is Lord Vetinari (Anna Chancellor), who is the ruler of the city and an overlord that doesn't mince words. He's the one who oversaw the rules allowing guilds to participate in crimes and profited off the practice, which caused the old Watch to decay. The cops didn't believe in this controlled form of order, and it led Vimes to become a suicidal alcoholic when he tainted the honor the badge stood for.
While he gaslit himself into the facade, the delusion has come to a grinding halt with Vetinari's new plan. When Vimes reveals he has the magical sword Carcer needs to rule a dragon, he admits it will be tough to find a way to destroy it. However, the lord confesses he wants the sword himself. He shows Vimes the bodies of bounty hunters that have been tracking the creature, and it's at this point the captain realizes Vetinari wants the beast alive so he can inject more fear into the city.
Clearly, Vetinari feels like things are spiraling out of control and the guilds have too much power. But with this dragon, he'll have a judge, jury and executioner that no one could stop, making his city the most powerful ever. Vimes is stunned because he never expected his boss to go this truth, but in truth, he should have seen it coming a mile away.
Things then go from bad to worse when the lord tells Vimes he could have him and his crew killed in the blink of an eye. It's bad timing because Vimes is starting to crush on Lady Ramkin and his new cops want to change the city for the better. Vimes needs a new plan soon because there's also a civil war brewing after Carcer has co-opted the Thieves' Guild to steal the sword, meaning he might be looking to unleash the beast sooner rather than later.
The Watch is executive produced by BBC Studios' Hilary Salmon (Luther) and Phil Collinson (Doctor Who). The series, which will run for eight episodes, is written by Simon Allen (Das Boot). It stars Richard Dormer, Anna Chancellor, Lara Rossi, Ingrid Oliver, James Fleet, Marama Corlett, Sam Adewunmi, Jo Eaton-Kent, Adam Hugill, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Ruth Madeley, Bianca Simone and Ingrid Oliver. The Watch airs Sundays at 8 pm ET/PT on BBC America.
