WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Trickster Season 1, Episode 1, now available on The CW.
As Trickster's first episode unravels, it becomes clear that supernatural forces are stalking Jared (Joel Oulette), an indigenous teen trying to make a living in Kitimat, British Columbia. He's flunking out of school and selling MDMA to earn cash to support his deadbeat parents, but he begins having psychedelic trips and sees what appears to be an evil doppelgänger around town.
While he chalks it up to imagination at first, he soon crosses path with a sinister raven, suggesting it's much more. And by the time the premiere ends, it's clear this raven's a shape-shifter, and it wants Jared due to his secret lineage.
At the beginning of the episode, Maggie (Crystle Lightning) is in the woods, chasing after a mysterious man who's revealed to be Wade. He has her baby and when he stares at her to scare her off, his eyes turn black indicating he's a demon or such. Maggie, though, lets out a horrific scream that allows her to seemingly kill Wade and get the boy back.
This kid grows up to be Jared, and it seems like his coming-of-age is now calling evil forces back years later. It becomes apparent when Wade appears to him outside a bus-stop, trying to make small talk. Jared walks off, but when he turns back as he feels a connection, he sees a raven there, which makes him believe he's hallucinating. Wade's stalking the family, though, and later, Maggie thinks she's seeing him at Jared's fast-food job. She causes a scene and is kicked out, causing Jared to get fired.
However, Wade's playing mind games, which ties into Maggie speaking to some invisible entity. It appears her powers are driving her insane and she's scared she passed them down to Jared. Now, in Son of the Trickster by Eden Robinson, the novel the series is adapted from, Wade is more than a trickster -- he's the Haisla's maker of mischief, Wee'git. He's also Jared's father in the source material and wants the boy for himself, and the show is seemingly following a similar path.
The biggest clue comes at the very end when Jared's burying a dog that tried to attack him, only for the raven to show up and taunts him. This time Jared's afraid because he's lucid, but it tells him time's almost up, which causes the boy to flee. Whether Wade is coming to turn Jared into a weapon or take his powers remains to be seen, but it's clear everything has changed for the boy.
Based on Eden Robinson's Trickster trilogy and directed by Michelle Latimer, Trickster stars Joel Oulette as Jared, Kalani Queypo as Wade, Crystle Lightning as Maggie, Georgina Lightning as Sophia, Anna Lambe as Sarah, Nathan Alexis as Crashpad, Craig Lauzon as Phil, Gail Maurice as Georgina, Joel Thomas Hynes as Richie and Jamie Spilchuk as Mr. Good. Trickster airs Tuesdays on The CW.
