Batman '89 Artist Reveals the Dark Knight's New Costume | CBR

The artist of the upcoming Batman '89 digital first comic has shared a concept sketch of the character's new costume -- or two costumes, as it were.

Artist Joe Quinones tweeted an image of the Dark Knight's traditional costume to be featured in the series, unsurprisingly based on the outfit worn by Michael Keaton in 1989's Batman. With its all-black design and yellow chest emblem, the costume largely mimics the one featured in the film. Not visible, though, are the character's eyes, as Quinones' design instead opts for the more mysterious glowing white eyes seen in Paul Dini and Bruce Timm's Batman: The Animated Series, a look also traditionally favored in the comics throughout the character's history.

Perhaps more notably, the designs also include a concept for Batman's under-suit. Batman's under armor is likewise all black, with an offset, red graph-like design emblazoned on the chest, roughly over the location of the character's heart. The design could be a mere static image, or could possibly be some kind of life sign monitor. Regardless, as pointed out by fan Jason Rempala in response to Quinones' tweet, the look is based on a classic Batman Returns Bruce Wayne action figure, with the jagged red line on the Kenner figure approximating the look of a modified Bat-symbol.

Quinones' sketch also features a concept for Bruce Wayne himself, largely evoking Michael Keaton's appearance in the film but with the addition of thicker, wavier hair. The greying of the character's hair at the temples indicates that Batman '89's Dark Knight might be slightly older than the one seen in the movie. Bruce's squarer jaw and fuller physique also borrow from Batman: The Animated Series, per Quinones' notes.

DC announced the new digital first title on Tuesday, alongside its companion title Superman '78. Batman '89 is written by Batman screenplay co-writer Sam Hamm and drawn by Quinones. The series will feature all-new stories taking place within the continuity of the Tim Burton-directed Batman films.

Batman '89 isn't the first digital comic of its kind inspired by a live action Batman. Batman '66 was first released in 2013, and likewise contained new stories based on the classic Adam West/Burt Ward TV series that ran from 1966-68. That series, written by Jeff Parker and Tom Peyer and drawn by various artists, ran for 30 issues.

The first six issues of Batman '89 will be released digitally July 27, with subsequent chapters to follow weekly. The stories will then be made available in a series of traditional print comics before being collected in a hardcover edition in the fall.
